When the game gives me control, it's amazing.

When it takes it away i hate it.

    The shooty bits are adequate.

The survival part and story are a joke and this is downright Lara in torture porn territory to find a new way to titillate 15 year olds.

I don't know whether to never play it again or force my way through the bullshit because when it's good, it's old school actual puzzling, platforming, tomb raiding good. But there's an awful lot of bullshit to wade through.

    Fucking reboots.

That's the thing though. I want to be wrong but the game does too many things that stop it from being an amazing game. Every time I'm totally into it some shit is thrown my way.

    %}#%>{<~$]%#{

    Such a waste. :/

I think it's very very good. But I do think the defensive hype train going on is a little much. There are many things that need fixing to make it a 10 imo.

What does it take away? It is just a short cut scene, nothing that any other story based game doesn't do.

Also it is disturbing that you link it to torture porn. So a woman in pain and having various bad things happen to you equals porn? She pants because she just legged it out of some collapsing cave or something, she groans because she just injured herself etc.

Don't get me wrong there are faults. Like average combat, ninja sighted ai, generic enemies, lack of real tombs, one or two.silly.characters etc.

Im not getting the "tortue porn" feeling myself either.

The initial trailers and videos seemed to highlight that aspect more than the game itself does, being as they were put together by marketing half-wits. In fact it was those same trailers which put me off until reading this thread and getting some first hand views from the EG community.

From what I've played thus far Lara seems to be one of the better game characters in recent years.

Flawed for sure, too many QTE's at the start and I always preferred the raiding to the shooting, but a solid game.

I'm more frustrated than anything else. There's a seriously good game in there but you just have to wade through so much generic crap to actually play the good parts. Graagh!

I didn't mind all the QTEs at the start, in fact I liked how the whole opening tutorial was handled. Couple of the cut scenes during the game worked well with QTEs as well as the QTEs during normal fights using the counter move.

I really hate the Smash the X button to open the locked door. I know many games still do this, but can't we just press the button once. I'm just opening a bloody door. I'm sure game makers get a cut of controller sales, hence why more QTEs are in games just to break controllers.

Got a few more weird glitches on my last session:
-The opening few seconds of a cutscene repeated twice, leading to Lara jumping up and yelling ow three times in quick succession.
-A massive red and black jagged shape appeared on the screen during a firefight when Lara was facing in certain general directions (where the enemies were located, naturally). It took up most of the screen which obviously made things much harder, but it vanished after the fight had finished.
-Lara froze completely after hitting an enemy with an axe. You could rotate the camera and use the menus but no movement, weapons, etc. Which seemed a good time to break off. :)

Really, really enjoying it though. I think I must over halfway now.

Never thought of that, but it makes sense.

I literally can't fathom these "the game takes control away too often" complaints. Then again I played Metal Gear Rising before this where around half of the game's meagre running time is cutscenes or "hold forward and RT so the game can do all the impressive stuff for you!!!"

I'll never get my Orc looking the same again.

It's absolutely gorgeous on the PC. My machine can't handle ultra settings sadly. :(

Those of you on nvidia cards, this is relevant: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/03/07/nvidia-apologises-for-crummy-tomb-raider-performance/#more-144638

Turns out nvidia didn't get final code for the game until the weekend before release to prepare with the new driver release. :D

To be fair apart from that silly cleavage shot when she falls from the clifffaceat the beginning, I don't think they've overly sexualised her.

Still, it's really pissing me off that she hasn't put a bloody coat on yet!

    @kinky_mong

Thats a pretty good point, picked up MGS HD in the XBLA sale the other day as the present Mrs Lampy fancied watching a game she'd never seen before.

Its been years since I played Sons of liberty and I remembered the lengthy cutscenes but going from that on wednesday to Tomb raider last night was pretty jarring in terms of cutscene to gameplay ratio, so I've not felt any issues either.

Where do you pull comments like this from? "defensive hype train"? Really? All I'm seeing is people posting how much they're enjoying the game. I don't think it needs defending. I don't really see people attacking it (well, except with inanities, frankly).

Maybe just let people enjoy the game without trying to explain they're wrong to do so?

    what's this shit?
I am enjoying it too, it's just every time anything is picked up, no matter how small, the pack pounce. Maybe you should should just put me on ignore, there's a good lad.

I'm about 3 hours in, just heading to the radio transmitter. Lots of fun so far. Looks great and Lara so far seems like a very "human" character. I notice a lot of the achievements are MP which sucks a bit. Anyone played the MP? If so how's it hold up? Would like to 1000G this but looks like a mission!.

Is this some weird "Americans not speaking properly" thing like "I could care less"? ;)

I'm saying I don't understand how people can say the game wrestles controls away from them too much because in my opinion it doesn't.

Ah right, no I was implying that I might not be seeing the constant removal of control to the extent some others have because I'd been playing a game closer to an interactive movie before.

I'll never get my Orc looking the same again.

Got this on PS3, anyone else get the weird graphical glitching/artifacting on the boot up screens? I've seen it on the PC too but it was worse on my PS3 version?!

I expect that on a PC with a dodgy hardware/drivers or something but not on a console?
Yeah, I've seen it the twice I've booted up. Just thought it was meant to look a bit funky honestly, as it appeared in the same places and it hasn't occurred anywhere else in game, so far.

    Anyway, yes this is awesome.

It amazes me that a game in this day and age, looking like that, can run on a 360 without any racket from the console at all. The Slim was clearly designed to perfection. So glad I rebought one before getting this.

Yeah, play tomb raider then load up something like perfect dark zero to see just have huge the difference is even though same hardware.

Good god i'm loving it. It just seems so well balanced. You're never doing the same thing for too long, all the action sequences are short and well done, and all the little surprises along the way are really well placed. Lara is a great character, very convincing. Hearing her squeal and panic at conflict at the beginning of the game, and now hearing her shouting, 'yeah, i'm still alive!' with a bit of attitude is great. She's evolving through the incidental stuff as well as the cutscenes etc.

You must be the change you wish to see in the world - Ghandi
