It's not working. Those people are by far the vocal minority, and they all use the internet as their podium. Even in gun loving Idaho the vast majority of people I actually speak to face to face are heavily in favour of extra gun control, and don't view it as "THEY WILL TAKE MY GUNS AWAY". Even the relatively hardcore repubs I know are pissed off that all they do is oppose Obama on everything rather than trying to do anything themselves.

As Khani said, more people supported the background check bill than believe in God, and that's evident from multiple, thorough polls, not just cherry-picked statistics.

We'll have to see I guess.

Is there a mechanism in the US whereby a failed bill can be re-introduced? I'm thinking on the lines of something like how in the UK, the Lords can only veto an Act twice before it automatically passes on its 3rd reading and acceptance in the Commons.

I don't think there's a limit on how many times a bill can be reintroduced, though there may be an upper limit somewhere I'm not aware of (although there's certainly ways around it if there is). It's more a question of time and money.

To be honest, all you need to really do with regards to public feeling is look back at the election. If you believed the internet, it was either going to be a massive defeat or a very narrow victory for Obama. Instead it was a pretty decisive victory. The long and short of it is that only the outlying extreme types tend to vocalise their opinions on facebook, twitter and (irony incoming) message boards, and often those opinions are exaggerated and distorted simply for argumentation and trolling. The bill being defeated has little (perhaps even nothing) to do with public opinion and everything to do with money and power struggles.

The House has had 39 bills so far to repeal Obamacare so yeah, it will make another appearance. But it will make no difference till these TP duck sticks have been kicked to the curb. So I expect something will happen after 2016.

What bit of government is responsible for scheduling and arranging bills in the US? (I could Google, but hey)

That explains it pretty well. Or at least shows how freaking complex it is.

Basically, someone in the House or Senate comes up with a bill. They are meant to talk about it in committee, then it goes to the floor for a vote. IF it passes it must then go to the other chamber for more of the same. If it passes in both then the inevitable differences must be reconciled. When that's done then they vote to pass it again. Then it goes to the Pres to sign.

Or, as happens now, the Republicans say FUCK YOU NIGGA and nothing happens other than they create some bills based on a hallucination of Ayn Rand with a less tenuous link to reality.

    Head in the sand

The same day of the marathon bombing in Boston, 11 Americans were murdered by guns. The pregnant Breshauna Jackson was killed in Dallas, allegedly by her boyfriend. In Richmond, California, James Tucker III was shot and killed while riding his bicycle – assailants unknown. Nigel Hardy, a 13-year-old boy in Palmdale, California, who was being bullied in school, took his own life. He used the gun that his father kept at home. And in Brooklyn, New York, an off-duty police officer used her department-issued Glock 9mm handgun to kill herself, her boyfriend and her one-year old child.

The party that shouts loudest about taking 'Washington' out of the 'equation', caught trying to put it in.

Again, I think. Creationism must find a way!

    Hurrah for Obama

Barack Obama says Guantanamo Bay prison must close

At the White House, Mr Obama said the detention centre was "contrary to who we are" and harmful to US interests.
Not so sure about that though. I doubt half the country agrees with that.

Wasn't closing Guantanamo one of his campaign promises in 2008? I know he's faced a lot of opposition but it feels like it's a lot of talk.

It was. I don't see why it'll be any different this time around. Winning a second term hasn't changed his opponents one bit.

It's interesting that when the Democrats get in the Republicans can still hold back reforms they're against. But when it was the Republicans the Democrats were powerless to do anything.

Quite apart fron the gun control debate, the level of stupidity from everyone involved in that is so staggering that it would almost be amusing if not for the fact that a child is now lying dead.

17 wounded at Mother's Day parade. Wonder what the NRA will say about that? Perhaps all mothers should be trained and armed before attending parades, or something.

I was a liberal mole at Fox News: From Bill O’Reilly to Roger Ailes, here’s all the inside dope

Nothing scandalous or anything, but quite an interesting read if you're curious how Fox News/The O'Reilly Factor operates behind the scenes.

I love Aaronovitch's dichotomy - either there is no conspiracy, or he's one of them.

    Perfect jibe!
