They changed the rules a few years back - used to be anything but two hands is game for a challenge, but now any time the keeper is in possession of the ball he can't be challenged (including the act of throwing it up to kick, as you mention).

Ah, BBC have dug it out now:

"A goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball: i) while the ball is between his hands or between his hand and any surface (e.g. ground, own body) ii) while holding the ball in his outstretched open hand iii) while in the act of bouncing it on the ground or tossing it into the air."

    Thanks for clarification.

Happy with that performance, very positive in the second half with some really good moves put together. Good to see Stewart can still produce a flash of quality every once in a blue moon. Assaidi looking pretty good, impressed with his performance.

Stark contrast between him and Suarez late in the game; he gets clattered into, okay not a foul but still just gets up and gets on with it, Suarez rugby tackles a guy then complains about it and gets booked.

Suarez is the wrong player for that position in Liverpools team IMO and not just because he's a dick. He's a support striker all day for me rather than a lone front man.

I reckon someone like Adebayor or Ba would be much better playing in that centre forward role for Liverpool, much like Danny Graham did under Rogers for Swansea. Someone good at holding the ball up and staying in the right position. If there was someone that could keep the ball there then the midfielders would get a lot more goals.

I agree Suarez isn't a natural lead forward. Tbf Rodgers had the chance to use AC like that but he didn't fancy it. At least not yet.

Yeh, he's just never gonna be the one though Carroll is he? Rodgers wants someone with a bit more technique if anything.

I think keeping an eye on the Adebayor situation at Spurs might be decent idea, even on loan. I mean they have 2 very promising youngsters in Sinclair and Yesil that look more likely to be players that can hold the line, so a quick fix might be a good idea.

Two Spurs fans in hospital after being stabbed by Lazio hooligans last night, one in very serious condition.

    That's awful news.

Apparently somewhere between 40 and 100 armed ultras raided a bar with a group of peaceful Spurs fans who were being in no way rowdy or aggressive. At least one is in a seriously bad way i.e. probably going to die.

Totally and utterly fucked up. I swear to god if English fans did this we'd get chucked out of Europe for a decade. This isn't without precedent either.

    BBC article

    Fucking despicable.

Lazio should be kicked out of European competition's for this.

    Come and get it cumslingers!

Reasonably likely there's a racism angle to this as well.

UEFA/FIFA really need to stop pussyfooting around this sort of thing now. It is absolutely NOT acceptable and clubs should have fines of at least medium six figures, play behind closed doors or just be booted out altogether.

32, 500 fine? What's that to a club like Lazio?!

It's a disgrace how Italian and Turkish teams have fans that can get away with stabbings and kicking off without any kind of ban from FIFA or UEFA.

As if they just want it all resolved with handshakes and miniscule "fines".

They are fucking crazy. We played them in a pre-season friendly about, christ, 10 years ago now and the few travelling fans they had sprayed every available surface with the word ULTRAS, trashed a few pubs and generally acted like maniacs.

I mean, it was a friendly, for fucks sake. No one could quite believe it.

Weren't they (some of them) racist when they came to the Lane?

Fucking savages. Kick them out of Europe and ban them for five years. It's the only sensible course of action to prevent more people from getting killed trying to watch their team. It's absolutely horrific and it happens all the time and will happen again. If they don't get banned I seriously think clubs should consider a boycott. It seems harsh on the club but this shouldn't be allowed to happen under any circumstances, yet it still feels like it's an accepted risk of travelling to certain European games.

Nothing major will happen, not with these two authorities in charge.

They got fined for making monkey noises at Defoe yeah. But this is probably more about the Nazi/fascist Ultras, and the Spurs Jewish thing.

2 Roma fans arrested. One ran onto a bus and boasted about the attack after it was done, bus driver took his photo and gave it to the police.

What impressed me most about him was how well he read play, off his line numerous times but every one proved to be the correct decision.

Well we should have closed that out and won the game but you can't take anything away from young boys, both their goals were absolutely top drawer.

Also I've noticed that someone in the itv sport music department has a real hard on for the heavy. Not a bad thing.

Christ, just seen a pic of one of the injured Spurs fans. Sickening.

Scum of the earth, UEFA need to get a grip. Although Lazio are claiming they weren't fans.

Count yourself lucky. We were dire, again. And Maritomo were even worse. A good team would have obliterated them.
