So far they seems too expensive for the convenience of not having to trudge down to Game, HMV, gamestation etc.
Now if they start getting featured in the "Deal of the Week" at 33-50% off I might reconsider. :)

I grabbed a copy of VivaPinate:TiP for 10 new from John Lewis not so long ago whilst looking at the nice new LED TV's.

    9.98 from Amazon.

The only problem with that is that they'll have gone to bed by the time it's finished downloading. Unless they are insominacs of course, and are still online for the 6 or so hours it'll take before you are able to play it.

Bought Viva Pinata:TiP myself through the GoD channel, as I've not seen it anywhere for much less than 20 anyway so price isn't much of a concern. But the fact it takes so long to download completely ruins any pretension of 'convenience'. It'd be quicker to take a 30 mile long round trip to buy a boxed copy than download as a GoD.

I can see this fatal flaw becoming even more major when (if) MS start to sell games on their respective release date. Imagine trying to download a 6.5gig Gears 3 on release day with everyone in the world trying to download it at the same time. The service slows to a crawl when a lukewarm 1gig demo is put up on the Marketplace, what the fuck will it be like for a big name release?

That's why they say they won't do day one download releases.

They could go the steam route on that. Download a bit before hand, and unlock on the day.

Yeah, I was thinking that myself earlier, that it would be great to be able to pre-load games before their release.

Not that'll I'll ever use GoD for retail games TBH.
Firstly, I like my boxes, instruction books, ltd eds, maps etc.
Secondly, I can't trade it in.

Edit: Now, if I could rent the game for a week... for say... 400MSP... NOW you're talking about a GoD I would use.

Now you're talking. For rental it'd be awesome. I could see myself renting those games you'd *like* to play, but aren't bothered enough to actually buy.

But for games I really want, I like the option of selling/trading in/swapping or even lending to a mate.

If the current crop of GOD were a fiver I might be tempted - considering they're not even giving me a box, disc, hard copy of instructions and there's much smaller overhead on the transaction. But at 20 - not in a million years!

Indeed. GoD rental service would be all kinds of awesome. Probably never going to happen simply because it would be too awesome.

Another plus of a GoD rental system would be that developers could actually make money from rentals.

    Portable view - Never forget.

Pah 20 is a pittance in comparison to here, just checked the GOD service for Ireland today and every game seems to be 29.99! Now i know we generally get shafted on exchange rate but 30 does not equal 20. Added to this you can pick up most of the games on it for well under 20 and some for less than a fiver in the shops(PDZ & Kameo for 30 lol). I really don't think I'll ever use this service.

This is from someone who has used the Xbox originals service a number of times, I think its priced perfectly for the impulse buy, but GOD needs a serious re think imo.

Edit: Now that rental service is a genuinely good idea.

IIRC in Oz Mass Effect is about 6000MSP, about twice the price of retail. Something daft like that anyway.

Yep it is, which is just insane if OZ is anything like here you would be able to pick up Mass Effect for less than a quarter of that price.

    Ideas...

400MSP rental is about 3.50, for a week. So it's competative with the likes of Blockbuster etc.

200MSP to the dev, 200MSP to Microsoft. Or go for 450MSP and split 3 ways between MS, Dev and Publisher.

If you go onto buy it in your weeks rental you get the full price of the rental off. (Effectively a cheaper try before you buy).

If you re-rent it without deleting it, you get it for a bit cheaper due to saving on bandwidth bill. (Which must be huge for Miscrosoft in fairness)

GoD is just a new RRP. So long as the disks are available then 'meh'.

I'd be up for that, although they'd probably bump the price up to 800 points, even then I'd do it, since if I wanted I could probably complete whatever game it is in a week.

    400MSP for 3 days.
    800MSP for 7 days.

Only put older titles on there though (Over 6 months? 1 year) so as to not harm actual sales.

I dunno. It's not like it'll happen anyway.

I don't know it might, If the take up for GOD(Funny abbreviation) is low, it's something they might do.

Although I don't know if it would be financially viable with bandwidth costs etc, to have games at that price that most money concious people would complete in the rental period.

Checked these out last night. 20, I dont think so, most of those games I could get packaged for at least a fiver cheaper and I dont have to buy a new hard drive either.

    No thanks.

They can't upset retailers. Retailers are mean motherfuckers.

I don't see Sony or MS or even Nintendo having the balls to face the shelf gods. Only guys who don't sell boxes can do that.

Aren't Sony already facing up to retail with the PSP GO?

It seems so, and the guys aren't finding that much fun. Seems that have been threats from retailers saying that they have no interest in selling the machine.

If game retailers don't want to sell the unit then fair enough - they're living on borrowed time anyway. There are plenty of supermarket and electrical shops who will happily sell it for a normal sized profit (i.e. about 30%) in the same way they sell MP3 players, TV's, mobile phones etc with no ongoing revenue.

Hopefully, digital distribution doesn't take over totally.

It will, but one can hope.

Can you buy these games with MS points? I thought we were supposed to be able to? If we can how many points are they?
