My friend went to North Korea, he is a Kiwi but has been working in China for the last ten years, really interesting photos and as mentioned above you couldn't go anywhere without the guide.
You also couldn't leave the hotel at night, wander about during the day or eat where you want. Like being on a super strict school trip.

They have some interesting takes on history in the museums apparently, especially with regard to naval skirmishes with the US and clashes with the south.

I thought you lot might be interested in this thread on reddit: I visited North Korea in 2008, AMA [Ask Me Anything]

It really is fascinating, and well worth a chunk of your time.

I was going to pick out some choice quotes, but so much of it is worth reading that I'll just recommend you click the link. The responses from the submitter should have the username highlighted in blue to make them easier to spot.

He also took some stunning photos. Not only are the subjects of the photos really interesting, but they are beautifully shot too.

    Second batch of photos.

The Atlantic has an interesting article about small media organisations trying to get information into North Korea and how they are attempting to loosen the grip of the NK government on what information Koreans can get Click

Nothing to Envy and THe Dark Tourist are both books that cover North Korean life. NtE's author interviewed North Koreans who managed to make it to the south. It's a glimpse into what life is like - and feels like - from their perspective.

The Dark Tourist only has a chapter on NK, but it's the author going there on a coach trip. That's all about how crazy it is from a westerner's point of view. Dom Joly wrote it.

Fucking harrowing article, by and escapee, about life in the North Korean "complete control districts" where "irredeemables" are basically worked until they die:

    Linkage.

This is quite a shocking read. :'(
Eating rats was essential to survival. Their flesh could help prevent pellagra, which was rampant, the result of a lack of protein and niacin in their diet. Prisoners with the disease suffered skin lesions, diarrhoea and dementia. It was a frequent cause of death. Catching rats became a passion for Shin. He would meet his friends in the evening at his primary school, where there was a coal grill to roast them.

    Self-sufficiency.

"As the saying goes, a new-born puppy knows no fear of a tiger. South Korea's erratic behaviour would only herald its final destruction," North Korean diplomat Jon Yong Ryong told the meeting.

Mentalists. I do wonder when this will all come to a head, it's going to be incredibly messy for everyone involved when it does.

Most people on this side of the border seem to pay little heed to what NK is doing from my experience, although to be fair I do live in a southermost province far from the NK border...

None of my S.Korean students give a fuck. In fact, I read one interview with a senior S.Korean analyst who stated that the South doesn't want the regime to collapse. If it did millions would pour over the border. It would make German reunification look like a piece of piss.

Is there such a thing? Every human has a dark side. I personally have more respect for animals than humans in general.

Of course you respect a tiger, he's gonna eat you if you don't respect him. And of course you don't respect humans, they don't come after you when you walk down the street - only natural to have less respect for them.

Dennis Rodman is a fucking idiot:

Visits North Korea and proclaims him and Kim Jong Un 'friends for life'.

Apart form anything else, NK is one of the most racist places on earth. Utterly bizarre.

Am i the only one thinking that the "documentary crew" that have gone there with Rodman are government agents?

Or maybe i watch too much TV.....
