Is this game worth buying? Does it come close to the originals which I loved. Some people seemed to hate it

I liked it on PC, I only played through once and haven't touched the expansion pack

I thought it was pretty good at the time, but I'd get a demo first since it seems to have a lot of compatibility issues with recent graphics cards.

    It is not great.

If your expectations are low maybe you'll enjoy it.

There are many games you can get that are much better.

The first half of the game is really very boring, although the second half is reasonable. Takes months getting there though.

Its fine. Very dark though. Quite spooky. Lots of narrow corridors and you can probably pick it up for 5-10 max.

What's not to like about that?

If you enjoyed the first two and want more of that then you'll probably love it.
The tech was nice and it has some great atmosphere but the gameplay was just open door, kill stuff, close door, kill stuff, pick up key, kill stuff, open door, kill stuff and people wanted an evolution to the gameplay to match the prettier graphics.
It's worth a go as long as you want Pretty Doom.

    This signature intentionally left blank.

Doom = at least 4 monsters per room. Doom 3 = max 4 monsters per level.

I liked it at the time, but don't imagine it's aged well.

    Just get Dead Space instead.

There's a lot of truth in this comment

It's true; it's a departure from everything you're used to, and very Marmite. On PC, try it; it's cheap enough. Consoles... less so. Mods make some issues disappear, basically.

Ok dead space is supposed to be great, the demo looked shit though.

Actually, one game that is quite similar to the original Dooms is Painkiller. Lots of mindless monsters, some great level design and it has an awesome stake gun.

Superb game. Ignore the haters. It's probably insanely cheap now too. Still looks great to boot.

Doom3 has lotsa cheap scares like gas pipes suddenly bursting and imps in closets. It's fun for what it is.

Decent game. First time I played a few hours I was disappointed, but months later when I got over the fact that it wasn't the Doom 3 of my dreams I went back and enjoyed it.

Although, like someone else said, Dead Space is really the game Doom 3 aspired to be, and miles better.

I gave up on Dead Space about half way through. It's fun enough but it's also incredibly linear and predictable - something which I suppose is also true of Doom 3 but I found it to be a lot more atmospheric for some reason. It was a few years ago that I last played it, so I might feel differently if I played it now.

It's okay. The whole flashlight-switch-to-gun thing was not a good idea.

Doom 3 has nice looking shadows, from before the time that every game decided it'd force you to endure soft shadows even though they look like shit, even at the highest setting

So predictable. Oh, a healthpack in a little alcove. Well no way could something fall away to reveal a monster when I get within two feet of it... D'oh!

    Didn't get on with it.

    I'm a grumpy bastard.

Agreed, the scares were of the very cheap 'BOO!' variety. I only played to about halfway through I think, but there was no subtlety at all

It's a fantastic game set in the true spirit of the originals. Don't listen to them naysayers, they don't know what a good thing is if it hit them in the face. \o/

I don't really see that. The first 2 had intricate/imaginative level designs with lots of secrets and lots of monsters. The first half of Doom 3 is a system shock wannabe, with bland, one way corridors, cheap scares and one or two monsters. Half way through they start making things interesting, but before that, it's just dull.

One of Doom3's problems was that it was far too long - it took me over 20 hours to finish it. Had they condensed all the good bits into perhaps 10 hours, I think it would have been a much better and more memorable game.
