I sold my PS3 based on the assumption this is never happening.

From the gameplay videos they very much looked like set pieces. Not in the traditional sense but just doing the right thing at the right time.

I think the thing is you've got a fucking huge beast at your command and to build in AI which is not only intelligent for the beast but to handle the required physics involved is, in iteself, a bit much for the PS3 to handle.

It could be anything though. It's a real shame but I don't think it'll ever come out.

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

    Shuhei Yoshida

"What does that question mean [is it still a PS3 game]? It is a PS3 game," he stressed.

Which doesn't rule out a possible PS3/PS4 dual release.

Development hell, not coming out is my guess.
Sony are skint and will surely scrap it now.

Can anyone think of a game that ran into development problems such as these and still turned out excellent, or at least OK?

This really doth not bode well.

    Alan Wake

    But in general you're correct.

It's telling they've had to draft in help from Sony UK and US. Japanese developers have really not transitioned well to this gen, especially Sony Japan.

Gran Turismo 5? ICO? - was supposed to become PS1 game and ended up on PS2...

Stalker went through ridiculous development hell and ended up being imo the best PC game ever.

And when you consider how boring SoTC was imagine how boring this must be if they can't even release it after this long.

Yes, but those just turned a flawed gem into a polished one. It was still a brilliant game before the mods turned it into an exceptional one. They didn't reinvent it through mods.

Also Half Life 2 had development hell of a sort.

It really depends on the nature of the problems. If the game itself isn't working and progress isn't happening fast enough to allow a release within this generation, they either draft in developers or cancel.

Assuming the reports of other Sony studios pitching in are correct, they went with the former, which buys The Last Guardian another year or two.

If they still can't move things forward they'll either be forced to go over Ueda's head and start removing the troublesome features, or mothball the game if Sony continues with some variant of the Cell architecture for the next generation.

If they switch architecture again for the next generation, Team ICO would probably once again spend years building an engine from scratch just as they did this time if SCEJ management continued in the same hands-off manner as this generation. Switching to the PS4 could easily extend development well past ten years.

SCEJ has probably been most afflicted by the problem which has dogged Japanese console development this generation, not enough experienced programmers.

Konami, somehow managed to get away with it because it was an early release, technically, Metal Gear Solid 4 is an absolute disaster, I've never come across a game that requires multiple massive installs throughout the game. It was a strange echo of multi-load cassette titles on the 8-Bit systems.

There are so many examples of ambitious projects which lacked the necessary staff to make the ideas reality. Team ICO should have started with a transitory project, a PSN game and they'd almost certainly be further along than they are now, This would have got them dealing with real world problems, getting a game finished and finding out what they can realistically do with the staff they have and the platform.

Instead they spent years on ideas and building an engine. After a few years of that, SCEJ should have stepped in and directed them to use middleware, make a game that will work with this proven engine that actually exists, get a game done.

How can it be dead in the water? I think I remember Ueda saying in the last news vids on TLG that it was almost finished, at least the engine, mocap and technical stuff was done?

How can they think throwing away all the money spent on it so far is a good idea?

Surely they need it as one more AAA for this generation? Unless the Orbis release is sooner than we think?

    Poo.

Matter of opinion obviously but I thought Splinter Cell: Conviction was the dog's bollocks and that went through development hell.

Games that go through development problems turn out good more often than not.

@ecureuil Actually Duke Nukem would suggest otherwise :)

They have probably renamed it and will announce the game at Gamescon next week along with a release date and people will be happy.
