I just ordered MM9 by Hiroshi Yamamoto. It's about a special response unit tasked with battling giant monsters in Japan. Essentially a serious take on Godzilla, Mothra et. al. I hope it is good, it sounds like a laugh.

I've just started The Great Gatsby (first time read). Given its brevity, I suspect I'll have this rattled off within a week or so. For some reason I'd always assumed it was a huge tome of a tale - no idea where I got that from...!?!

Initial impressions are that the writing is stunningly beautiful, with the author able to create evocative settings and readily-imaginable character mannerisms to give you a complete mental picture, all within an enviably concise number of words.

My only concern is that it's a book which will be populated by a wealth of vacuous and supercilious characters that I'll struggle to warm to. Not that such thing would be a deal breaker - I've read and enjoyed many a book where I've at best disliked, at worst loathed every character, and still found them interesting - but I'm just noting it as an initial reservation.
Isn't that the point of Fitzgerald though? Tender is the Night is the same. It's about these decadent, but soon to be decaying lifestyles and you can't help but hate the lot of them!

Not reading much at the moment, struggling to get into anything. Even the pap I generally read.

As great as Tender is the Night is, I couldn't help but snigger at Dick Diver's name every now and again.

Reading A Confederacy of Dunces at the moment, which is completely terrific.

You're supposed to hate Fitzgerald characters. It's not like, say, Atlas Shrugged, where the pricks at the centre of the book are intended to be paragons of virtue.

I've just started the first Jack Reacher novel. How the fuckity fuck did Tom Cruise get cast in that role?!

Shantaram, I'm 60% of the way through it and it's pretty good but I appear to be losing interest slowly.

    Come and get it cumslingers!

I am just about to start The Fault In Our Stars by John Green from Nerd Fighters. It seems to be getting a lot of praise so hopefully I enjoy it.

In answer to my own question, it seems Cruise himself bought the rights to the books. Good grief.

Finished reading The First Law trilogy last night. Brilliant stuff, it's the first set of books that have really gripped me since A Song of Ice and Fire series and I have a new favourite author as a result.

And loving it. I know it's fashionable to moan about it but I'm bowled over

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

Struggling to find what to read now. Gave up on wheel of time at about 6th book.might go back to it some time. Looking for suggestions. Prefer sci-fi/fantasy or decent horror would make a nice change. Read most of the books mentioned in here recently. Loved first law. Love Richard Morgan's stuff.kovacs rules. Just read the inquisitior trilogy 40k books and enjoyed them.

Finished Stephen King's 11-22-63 a couple of weeks ago.

Just finished Kurt Vonneguts Slaughterhouse Five and getting to the end of Iain M Banks Hydrogen Sonata.

Finished Song of Ice and Fire a few weeks back. Great books but I was flagging a bit towards the end. Currently reading my first ever Bond book, Devil May Care, and tbh I'm not feeling it.

Tsk, if you're going to read Bond, start at the very beginning! Fleming's novels are great, if of a time.

Oooh, those First Law books sounds good.

I'm currently reading A Winter Haunting by Dan Simmons. Really, really awful sequel to Summer of Night, which was bloody fantastic and probably the scariest horror story I've ever read. Very disappointing, it's like he just couldn't be arsed.

Currently reading 'Insomnia' by Stephen King.

To be honest, I'm really only reading it due to the links it has to the Dark Tower series.

I usually devour King books within a matter of days, but I can't seem to get into this one at all. Perhaps it's harder to relate to the characters as they're all considerably older.

I've tried to make a concerted effort to read some classics (New Years resolution), but am failing miserably.

Any recommendations for a good sci-fi read to pull me out of my readers block?

I know, I usually respect the order of things. I'll go back after this and try the first ones. I do like the unabashed absurdity of the characters. And I never realised what a drunk Bond is!

Will add it to the list, cheers! I fully intend to read Best Served Cold and I heard Red Country is his best work. Sounds interesting from the get go, I mean, a fantasy western?

At the minute I've started The Player Of Games. Really enjoyed Consider Phlebas and I heard this is the best in the series. Here's hoping.

I'm currently reading Reamde by Neal Stephenson.

I'm struggling a bit, the explanations of MMO game mechanics bore me half to death so god knows what an average Joe would make of it. There are whole sections that could have been cut down to "people who write the stories for fantasy stuff are crazy eccentrics".

I didn't really get one with Snow Crash either and thought I'd give Stephenson another shot, I'm only a quarter through so I can't make too many judgements yet but I probably won't be reading another.

Please don't use the delete button, think of the children.
