Registered 10 years agoI just ordered MM9 by Hiroshi Yamamoto. It's about a special response unit tasked with battling giant monsters in Japan. Essentially a serious take on Godzilla, Mothra et. al. I hope it is good, it sounds like a laugh. -

Isn't that the point of Fitzgerald though? Tender is the Night is the same. It's about these decadent, but soon to be decaying lifestyles and you can't help but hate the lot of them!
I've just started The Great Gatsby (first time read). Given its brevity, I suspect I'll have this rattled off within a week or so. For some reason I'd always assumed it was a huge tome of a tale - no idea where I got that from...!?!
Initial impressions are that the writing is stunningly beautiful, with the author able to create evocative settings and readily-imaginable character mannerisms to give you a complete mental picture, all within an enviably concise number of words.
My only concern is that it's a book which will be populated by a wealth of vacuous and supercilious characters that I'll struggle to warm to. Not that such thing would be a deal breaker - I've read and enjoyed many a book where I've at best disliked, at worst loathed every character, and still found them interesting - but I'm just noting it as an initial reservation.
Not reading much at the moment, struggling to get into anything. Even the pap I generally read. -

Registered 2 years agoAs great as Tender is the Night is, I couldn't help but snigger at Dick Diver's name every now and again.
Reading A Confederacy of Dunces at the moment, which is completely terrific. -

Registered 10 months agoYou're supposed to hate Fitzgerald characters. It's not like, say, Atlas Shrugged, where the pricks at the centre of the book are intended to be paragons of virtue. -

In answer to my own question, it seems Cruise himself bought the rights to the books. Good grief.

Registered 4 years agoFinished Song of Ice and Fire a few weeks back. Great books but I was flagging a bit towards the end. Currently reading my first ever Bond book, Devil May Care, and tbh I'm not feeling it. -

Registered 3 years agoOooh, those First Law books sounds good.
I'm currently reading A Winter Haunting by Dan Simmons. Really, really awful sequel to Summer of Night, which was bloody fantastic and probably the scariest horror story I've ever read. Very disappointing, it's like he just couldn't be arsed. -

Registered 6 years agoCurrently reading 'Insomnia' by Stephen King.
To be honest, I'm really only reading it due to the links it has to the Dark Tower series.
I usually devour King books within a matter of days, but I can't seem to get into this one at all. Perhaps it's harder to relate to the characters as they're all considerably older.
I've tried to make a concerted effort to read some classics (New Years resolution), but am failing miserably.
Any recommendations for a good sci-fi read to pull me out of my readers block? -

I know, I usually respect the order of things. I'll go back after this and try the first ones. I do like the unabashed absurdity of the characters. And I never realised what a drunk Bond is! -

I'm currently reading Reamde by Neal Stephenson.
I'm struggling a bit, the explanations of MMO game mechanics bore me half to death so god knows what an average Joe would make of it. There are whole sections that could have been cut down to "people who write the stories for fantasy stuff are crazy eccentrics".
I didn't really get one with Snow Crash either and thought I'd give Stephenson another shot, I'm only a quarter through so I can't make too many judgements yet but I probably won't be reading another. Please don't use the delete button, think of the children.
