A very reliable source close to Duke Nukem Forever developer 3D Realms today confirmed to Shacknews that the development studio has been shut down.

The closure came about as a result of funding issues, our source explained, with the shut down said to affect both 3D Realms and the recently resurrected Apogee. Employees of both entities have already been let go.

I always suspected it would be the best game ever or the worst game ever, not that it would just never be. They should just leak it as is on the net if the news is true.

I would have bought it even if it blew, just to have it on my shelf.

Hell, I might mock up a box and put it up there just to make myself feel better and wow people that nose through my collection.

    No. NOOOOOOOooOOOOO

We waited all this time! It's like Jesus Christ speaking over the intercom to Christian fundamentalists saying "oh sorry guys, I'm not coming back after all"

I loved the thought of a bunch of perfectionists tinkering away for years, then scrapping it all each time there's an engine update or some new gaming mechanic they could bolt into it.

It's like the one thing you could truly depend on as vanished from the landscape and you're left with bleak uncertainty. Just when it came to light that the PC was the biggest gaming platform too. What a shame.

I think DB has been saying what many people have been thinking, albeit in his usual 'bombastic' style :p

Heh, what are the odds some other development studio picks up the rights for Duke a few years down the line, and this whole cycle repeats.

    So.

You want all the artists, programmers, designers who must have come and gone over the years to work at 3D Realms on a IP that looks interesting to never work again.

    Nice.

    "architects of this sorry episode"

Do you read? You should, it helps on a forum.

I'm sure there were a few more forces at work than just the incompetence of a few people Sam_spade. your comment seems overly harsh. I personally just hope their children are born ginger

by the way, is Sam Spade the character from the Maltese Falcom?

I always got the impression that they were never going to release it, just sort of use the IP as a sketchpad for any cool ideas that crop up and if a game magically materialises from this mess of scribbles, then all the better. Hyping it as an actual game when they never meant to release it kept them in business for longer than they deserved and gave them a nice little nest egg to sell off when their bullshit wore too thin.

What's the betting they sell the IP and the mass of half baked ideas onto EA or Ubi for a fair few mil and skip off into the sunset leaving a beleaguered set of inhouse devs to unravel their nonsense with a 12 month deadline to get it all in order.

If i could chose who got to pick up the IP, I'd go for Rockstar. I think they could really make something of aud Nukem.

Lets face it, whoever picks it up will make a dogs dinner of it. If it gets picked up that is, I can't see anyone wanting to touch it with a very long, shitty stick.
