What song do you all play when you try out someone else's guitar?

Personally its Screamager by Therapy? for me...

Tornado Of Souls, Rust In Peace/Polaris or Holy Wars by Megadeth, usually.
Oh, and Sultans Of Swing :)

    Edit to say:
Not that I show off - usually I get to try out my teacher's guitars, either his or ones he has in to repair, so it's more about proving that I'm paying attention in lessons! Felt good ripping out Rust on a Mustaine V a couple of weeks ago :D

Alsorts, but most commonly Paranoid Android (Radiohead) and Oh Me and Lake of Fire (Meat Puppets/Nirvana unplugged).

Speaking of which I just recently finished a Latin Jazz version of Banana Co. Not my style of music but did it for a laugh. Might stick it up if people are interested.

I usually play Angi by Davy Graham/Burt Jansch. It's pretty much a standard for any folk guitarist.

Well, there is this but it's kind of disingenuous to have a tab for it. It's more of a chord work out with added bass notes. If you know the song then the tab helps quite a bit, if you don't know the tune then the tab wont mean anything.

You are a factory of sadness.

In my limited experience this is true for all tabs.

Well yes, I can't quite play it like that but then not many guitarists can because Jansch is such an individual player, especially the hammer ons and aggressive playing style.

You have to perfect the bass note runs as it is pretty much what gives it the distinctive sound. You could just play it simpler than the Jansch version (which I do, of course). It's the claw hammer style, which is a really useful technique, basically it's playing a melody on the bass strings (with the thumb) while keeping the chord fairly consistent.

So for Angi it's pretty much all Am apart from the turn around, which is dependent on preference. The Jansch and Graham versions are quite different and that what gives Anji its place as an important folk standard as it allows improvisation on an established form but with boundaries as to what can be achieved.

    It's still pretty advanced though.

I've been trying to play this on and off for about a year, I've still no idea. I can play one section and that's it :-/

    @boabg

Found a hosting site. I think. Here. Was my first attempt sampling drums so I suspect they're out. Recorded every part with the Mac's internal mic, mainly because I'm super lazy. Mixing is probably not too hot - again fairly new to actually doing it by myself. I wanted some trumpets in there, but the midi ones with Garageband are super crap. Singing isn't really my trade either.

Symptom of the Universe by Black Sabbath, chunky riff but some delicate fingerwork too.

Orion (harmony section, still sounds awesome on one guitar) or King Nothing both by Metallica.

Blackbird. Simple, elegant and I've never encountered anything like it for sound. Then again I'm an acoustic player. Don't really faff around on electric too much.

Under the bridge, Street Spirit, Wonderwall (obv.) or any of the 3billion songs around G,D,C / Am.

If an electric some Creep, Basket case or The Chain (Grand Prix riff)

All very standard beginner tunes, and all played very badly. But I normally won't care after a few beers :D

Always something finger picky like the intro to "Run to you" by Bryan Adams, or "Every Breath you Take" by The Police

    Widdling is for wankers :)

The Rain Song by Led Zeppelin. Alternate tuning, sounds excellent and will really stretch out a guitar and your fingers thus clearly demonstrating any inadequacies.

    Anything by Necrophagist.

I often also play that in regular tuning. Which is quite fiddly and doesn't sound as nice - but at least can be done on any guitar you pick up.

I particularly love playing the outro.

    real proof

erm... I usually end up playing Smoke on the Water, really badly. And then they ask me to stop.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.
