I noticed all links in the forum are using the mentioned redirection service now, or has it always been like this? It doesn't show in the status bar (or only after you've clicked the link once) so I might've just not noticed it before.

In either case I figure that's been enabled by EG and is not some kind of malware? http://redirectingat.com actually mentions it's used by online publishers, such as Eurogamer, but asking just in case. Wouldn't know how malware could do such a thing anyway.

    Hey,

Yesterday we integrated Skimlinks in to the forum. It rewrites certain links, automatically adding a referral URLs to places like Amazon. It means we get a small commission from links to shops which are clicked on via the forum.

The integration should be unintrusive, and hopefully doesn't noticeably affect your browsing. If it does, though, please let me know!

I noticed all the Flickr links I clicked yesterday went through some redirecting service, guess it was this one. What's it for?

    I don't really understand this :[

How does it affect things like Quidco? Or doesn't it?

It's like Quidco, but all the money goes into rauper's pocket. It's a bit of a low thing to pull on the forum without telling us, frankly, but they've been found out so had to admit it, which was good of them.

Those winks aren't fooling anyone Owen. I'm not sure why you're so mistrusting, I'm sure if you were running a business you'd want to make money as well. Slightly fruitless endeavour otherwise, no?

The "rauper's pocket" thing is a bit stale as well; there are many people who work here, and those people generally like to get paid a wage, as I'm sure you do.

There's nothing sinister at work here - we launched some site changes at 4pm yesterday, and unfortunately I've been too busy testing the site to write up everything that's changed.

Also, I'm happy to explain everything with regard to how the site works (see my open, explanatory post above). I don't appreciate the implication that we have things to hide.
  • Deleted user 21 April 2009 10:53:15
    Lordy, talk about touchy.

Okay, here's the TRUTH. I'm really not that bothered that you redirect through a system that makes you some cash if we buy something on a site that was linked to from this forum. Not really. However, it's a bit cheeky to not explain that it was in place until someone spotted it. Every other site I go to that is affiliated with sites like Amazon etc make it very clear that they are.

    S'all I'm saying.

And the winks were to emphasise poking fun at y'all. Because like I say, don't really care as it doesn't bother me that much.

Yes, we are touchy, because we're proud of our work. And Craig's already explained the position on announcing this - we weren't hiding anything.

For someone that isn't bothered by it, you sure do seem to enjoying spending a lot of time taking snidey little snipes at the way we run our site.

No, the smilies are a passive-aggressive way to say something hurtful, but make it seem like you're being friendly.
