Crackdown is fantastic, although quite tricky at first. I prefer the Megadrive version, it's the one I played first and I just find it a bit more accessible.

Some other great games that are somewhat similar in a top-down sense, without going too much into shoot-em-up territory:

    Ikari Warriors
    Commando
    Mercs
    Alien Syndrome
    Shackled

And of course Gauntlet, GTA and Gain Ground, as mentioned above. I like Gauntlet IV on Megadrive best, as it has a pretty cool quest mode where you can upgrade your hero's stats and work towards beating the bosses at the end of each tower.

Shock Troopers is a classic, I notice Mercs is another very similar title to that and Metal Slug too.

There was a top-down game for the SNES about gun-wielding chick on board of a spaceship. It probably was more adventurey than something like Shock Troopers. None of the names listed above rings the bell. Any ideas?

Metroid it was not. Top-down or isometric view rather than side-scrolling.

SNES definitely, although I wouldn't exclude words: "Alien", "Commando" or "Space" from the name. Perhaps the easiest way to find out is to rediscover it accidentally.

Crystals of Zong on the C64. I just love the name.

    Oh and

Spy Hunter, Bumping Buggies and one of the hardest fucking games ever - The Last V8.

Edit: My first game I ever bought Hover Bovver! Come on Mr. Minter, do this on XBLA.
