    http://kotaku.com/5211159/microsoft-extends-warranty-for-e74-failures

While the majority of Xbox 360 owners continue to have a great experience with their console, we are aware that a very small percentage of our customers have reported receiving an error that displays "E74" on their screen. After investigating the issue, we have determined that the E74 error message can indicate the general hardware failure that is associated with three flashing red lights error on the console. As a result, we have decided to cover repairs related to the E74 error message under our three-year warranty program for certain general hardware failures that was announced in July 2007.

They'll also refund you if you've previously paid for an E74 fix. Very surprising.

The customer service of Microsoft is getting far better. I think they realise they are in a position of strength, and they must keep the momentum, by keeping customers happy.

Blimey. Here was me wondering if they were going to try to get out of it, but they're actually doing the honourable thing.

    :o

Ooh nice one. I have an Elite siting here useless with an E74 failure. Which means I now have two consoles. Should I phone them up now or leave it a week?

Hmm, interesting - I've an E74'ed console sitting in the other room which I'd planned on binning as it was a few months out of warranty. Looks like I can get it fixed up without forking out after all.

You have to congratulate MS on having shown how shitty reliability can be managed into becoming a positive relationship with your customers.

    I caught an E73 after 14 months ;_;

Sent it away last week claiming three red rings. Fingers crossed.

I'm some parts of the US I'm sure you'd have heard about people shooting their TVs to stop Satan stepping through it if 360s *did* display a skull :D

@Dodgypast: kind of, yeah :) I think they want to keep customers as loyal as possible, and hell's bells, they must be desperate to make sure this kind of thing doesn't happen with the next machine. I wonder if this is coming out of the $1 billion set aside for RRoD replacements?

Fucking unbelievable. I put my old Xbox on eBay last week because of this error (and overheating) as a faulty console and I've already opened it up to try and repair it, thus voiding the warranty that hasn't existed until now.

They must be coining the dosh in off th3 360 to fund these things. Either way it's safe to assume they're intentions are to stick around in the console market for many a year.

That's bloody good news, got an old console in the loft with the dreaded E74 number, be nice to get it fixed up and sold off.

Shame for people that went the drastic routes of either selling it off as effectively scrap or tried to fix it themselves though. The E74 number did seem fairly common, when mine first went down and I posted about it a lot of others seemed to have the same issues.

Bloody good of them to not only extend the warranty but also refund prior charges, though it's a shame it's too late for people like Eraysor.

Most definitely. And with Apple likely to join in soon. It could be a great foursome battle. And also yes they are probably making some dosh of this. And with Sony being stubborn with there pricing they will continue to do so.

Christ, the 360 is such a flawed piece of hardware. Its amazing that there hasn't been some kind of recall imposed on them. I guess that is why the various extensions to warranties are provided by the company, to maintain goodwill with pissed off customers and keep authorities off of their backs.

Still, good to see they are doing it all for free... bet it costs them a fair bit of money to do so.

Haha, UPS are due to pick up my E74-ed machine today...I did say it was RROD to get a free repair though..

For me, E74 was heralded by evenly spaced vertical lines of pixels appearing across the screen when pushing out 3D, didnt appear to affect 2D graphics...apparently it's caused by scaler chip or GPU problems..which didn't seem too different from RROD faults?

Very generous but there again the Xbox 360 is so poorly designed anyway that I can confidently say that 99% of hardware failures are not due to wear 'n' tear but due to bad design in the first place. Microsoft should offer a three year warranty for the Xbox 360 regardless of what the problem is IMO.

P.S. My sixth faulty Xbox 360 was just collected by a bored looking UPS courier 10 minutes ago. He knew exactly what it was before I'd even handed him the box! Still it was a good day today apparently as he'd only collected five, including mine!

PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox One, PC (Intel Core i7-4770K, 16 GB, 3 GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780, Windows 8.1 Pro), iPad 4, iPad mini with Retina Display.

Just read this over at Kotaku. It's reassuring that if this pops up it's easy enough to get it replaced.

I do wonder though how many people are towelling their 360's when they break from other problems just to get a free swapout?

Ha. Looks like their UK support and repair page is down. I sent off for the box and got confirmation but no email with shipping details as promised, they must be getting hammered :p

I tried towelling my 360 when it E74'd at the beginning of March... It didn't work. MS still repaired it for free though.

    I totally called it.

Heh, me too. I hope they still fix it for free even if they turn it on and find the E74 error and find out I lied now they have the new warranty.

I first noticed my Xbox was dodgy when the water in Fallout 3 looked wrong. Next morning when I turned it on, bam, broken.
