The checkout girl: abused, ignored and on a till near you
The witty observations of a French checkout girl have become an international bestseller

I would quite like to read this when it comes out in English.

I would be interested to see if her experience is different to a British check out person.

The checkout staff at our local Sainsbury's are great, almost always friendly and they usually chat to you as well, brightens my day to be honest.

I would like to nominate the staff at Somerfield in Greenwich for the Checkout Asshat award however. Even after you'd been in there for everyday for years all they'd do was grunt and throw a bag at you.

Edit: I appreciate that this thread may not live up to the promise of it's title.

Did you hang girls on meathooks while grunting like a mong like Leatherface in Texas chainsaw massacre?

We only seem to have care in the community people in our waitrose, not in the thuggish sort of way... more a "hmm will i go for the guy with the bulging eyes and paedo smile or the twitching old woman who appears to have withered legs" sort of way. I prefer tesco cause i can be my own checkout jockey.

My local Asda is staffed by circus folk. It's awful. They have a midget/downs/godknowswhat guy on the tills and you can't understand a fucking thing he says, then he gets all angry if he has to repeat himself.

Then you say "pardon" again even though you heard him.

I'm all for getting the carnies out there, but have him mopping up baby sick or something ffs.

Lidl used to be terrible but now there's a gorgeous polish girl working there so it's all good when i go for my instalnt coffee and caramel waffle biscuits. Most of the other customers still look like the dregs of humanity though :)

I worked in a Well Known Holiday Camp as a teenager. Customers were mostly horrible.

Working in a call centre was worse.

Waitering wasnt too bad. Well the job made me suicidal but the majority of people were ok with some memorable exceptions.

I wouldnt rush to work with Joe Blow again though. How those orange women who work for Easyjet manage to keep smiling while being bellowed at all day I'll never know.

Electronics Boutique - A more wretched hive of scum and villainy (on the customer and management side) you could never hope to work for.

Worked in Prets also. Dishing out sarnies to tramps at the end of the day and watching 'em trying to sell them to buy booze with = TEH HILARIOUS!

I worked in Safeway, on pretty much all the different deptartments over the course of my employment, but being a checkout girl was probably the best time.

Looking back on it, it was an awesome job and the afterwork activies were great. And the real checkout girls were tasty fine laydeez.

I like to imagine they all make out on their breaks.

I've yet to use one. A couple of times I've had the evangelists try and pry me off normal tills. I even had one start repacking my basket off the conveyor until I told her to get stuffed.

"I think you'll find it more convenient."

"I think you'll find I prefer that this lady has a job."

That got rid of her. Although the teenage boy with one of those fancy new haircuts who was on the till didn't appreciate my stand much.
