Wonder if Dillinger and the agent are professionally over by the end.

Don't quite know what to make of it. The HD cameras are a weird contrast to the period setting; it almost looks like a really high budget home production.

This is out Friday. Should be really good (hopefully), but then again, I find myself saying that about nearly all Michael Mann's films, but then realise they aren't.

Aye, really looking forward to this one. It's out here today but I think I must go smashy stompy robots first.

Babyface Nelson is played by the actor who was Combo in Made In England.

Fucking awesome film - it was actually out yesterday for general release. Film of the year so far, or possibly the best film since the Dark Knight IMO.

Think Heat, but in the 1930s, and more action and you're there.

The style is the best bit - it's like being in a documentary in parts.

Will curb my enthusiasm and potential for spoilers there.

So you didn't see Star Trek then? Clearly film of the year.

(or Sleep Furiously maybe...but that's for a different crowd methinks).

    Woohoo - seeing this tomorrow.

Have avoided all trailers, so am going in relatively cold. Last movie experience was Terminator: Salvation. Let's hope this one is better :-)

    just saw this

was pretty good, a little too long and the action was a bit hard to follow at times, but the action was done really well most of the time

It's hard to explain, but it was like the movie had a really high framerate or something, like everything seemed to be moving faster and smoother than other films, made some scenes great, but much of it was a bit odd with the shaky cam and such

I know exactly what you mean. I think it's a mega resolution camera or something.

I hated its style. Felt like I was watching a cheap History Channel dramatisation.

/kicks people who film on video

Yeah I agree, it looks like a 80s ITV drama in parts. Overlit, badly filmed, and not very engaging.

That's what ruined it for me too :( Like I said in the "Rate the last film..." thread it looked as though we were watching rehearsals from the DVD extras.

5/10. I was a bit disappointed that it didn't delve in to the psychology of Dillinger, Purvis, Hoover, etc. We got the Who, What, and When, but not the Why.

A watched it on Sunday and thought it was shite. Interesting style and enjoyable enough, some of the more batshit gangsters were awesome too...

...but considering how they copped their whack it kinda made having an ending that didn't suck balls a bit impossible. That, combined with not much crime going on aside from two or three incidents and what you have is half a gangster movie and half a bucket of shat

    I'm a grumpy bastard.

Did anyone else think this film was just a re-skinned inferior version of Heat?

    Pretty much.

In the trailer Johnny Depp says to one of the bank customers, "We're here for the bank's money, not your money." This line was in a previous Michael Mann film. It was said by Robert De Niro in Heat (1995). In the finished film, this line is reversed to "We're not here for your money, we're here for the bank's."

If that's the case I'll hate it. I thought Heat was pap.

Saw this last night. Baby Face Nelson was one of those characters that you're a bit scared of - he's a bad baddie.
Bale was alright, kinda reassured my faith in him, Depp was good. And the other casting choices were pretty good - some good character actors in there.

But it didn't really have much 'zing', for a Michael Mann film. It was quite solidly told but I'd only go with a 6 or 7/10.

Wft? Heat is one of the greatest heist films of all time.
