Has anyone played the FIFA games on the vita? Really taken by Virtua Tennis 4 on it so hoping for similar portable funs.
I have the first one came with the vita. It is good no where near are advanced as the console relations but probably the best handheld football game. Fifa 13 and 14 are the same games with updated kits.

Apropos of not very much, I started playing some more Meikyu Cross Blood. Thoughts:

It feels completely in hock to older Wizardry. The way magic works in particular (four schools of magic, each with three spells per level and a fixed number of per-level casts rather than a reserve of magic points) feels very old fashioned. Defence is measured as D&D 2E style armour classes, almost everything enemies drop is trapped, everything you pick up needs to be identified, and it's significantly cheaper to manually heal everyone before resting as there's a cheaper option which only restores spells.

Classes (or "bloods" as they're called here) are far too similar. I have three characters in my front line, all with different main and sub bloods, and they all have one action they can take in battle: "fight". Two of my back row with bloods that correspond to Mage and cleric have identical spells. Frustrating, given the vast difference in skills between classes in Demon Gaze (and the flexibility of the Artifact system).

The UI is really, really bad. Menus are confusing, multi-level affairs, item transfers are painful and trying to work out whether a character can use one of the five billion items you've just identified at the entrance of a dungeon (one class can identify for free, but if he fails on an item he can get the Fear status ailment, which you have to "walk off" in a dungeon) is an enormous pain as you can only compare items when trying to equip them. You have to go into "status" menus to cast a spell or use an item in the field. The game does a really bad job of explaining the crafting system too.

In the dungeons it is fun to explore and build the map but experience levels are too low and enemy levels seem out of whack with actual enemy strength. Advancement seems super slow - nearly 7 hours in, my team are level 5 and have learned no new skills or spells since the start.

It's a competent enough game - I like the way that equipment is reflected on the character picture, and the auto pilot is great even though it doesn't support touch this time around, but after Demon Gaze it feels like a considerably older game. I gather it's a few sequels into a Wizardry spinoff series, and it really feels like something where they have built lots of things on top of a system, unlike Demon Gaze where they have clearly removed a lot of stuff which didn't work while keeping the interesting status buffs, skill synergies and loot focus. What I'm saying is, a game doesn't need four different ways to express a character not being able to participate in battle ("near death", "crash", "lost" and "burned out" ).

In other Experience news, I had a look on their website to see what they're up to (Stranger in the Town of Blades is out next year on 360!) they're staffing up a new game production team and the ads suggest a team working on handhelds. Hopefully it's an original Vita game, as I think they've effectively solved the dungeon RPG automap problem on a single screen device and the online message function on Demon Gaze worked well.

So, what have we got coming over the next few months?

Dragon's Crown, Terraria (?), Tearaway. Anything else decent confirmed for this side of Christmas?

    @Flying_Pig Sen no--er, nothing. ;)

Perhaps Ys Celceta and Valhalla Knights 3 could come out before Christmas if Xseed decides to release them digitally over here.

@cheeky_prawnking Cheers for the info, haven't played a console one since Fifa 12 so hopefully won't notice too much difference.

Gutted about the kit updates thing, it's the kind of thing that would annoy me playing with old lineups/non Wonga branded Newcastle kits. Yet I have to pay 35 instead of 10ish for the honour it seems.

I think it is closer to FIFA 11 in game play terms I can't remember fully. I am tempted by 14 if only to free up space on my memory card, plus I have lots to trade in.

@cheeky_prawnking I think that was the last time I was any good at it anyway! Think I might as well pay the extra and get the new one, the extra 25 is probably worth paying so not to spend hours and hours editing team line-ups.

Here is a video screen comparison between old and new Vita. Somewhat confusingly, the old Vita is white and the new one is black.

Well, that's MGS2 done. I really rather enjoyed that. And I (mostly) understood it this time too!

I did have a slight problem when fighting the mass-produced Rays near the end, as you need to be able to unequip your stingers at the tap of a button. The menus are on the screen though, so I missed it a few times and didn't get out of FPV in time. It was probably down to me being a bit more frantic with the timing than I needed to be though :)

Also, the final battle against Solidus was FAR easier than I remember it being :/

    Next up: MGS3!

FFXIV: ARR - Khroma Midgard, Odin.

@Ror1984 enjoy. I love MGS3. Played it for the first time on the Vita and it's one of my favorite all time games.

Is it just me or do Uncharted's colours look slightly nicer on the NEW Vita's screen?
  • Deleted user 23 September 2013 22:31:40
Roddy - you're right, my girlfriend said the same thing as soon as she saw the video.

OLED screens are amazing, but their one flaw is oversaturation. On cartoony stuff it's not a problem, but on realistic stuff it can look worse than a good LCD panel.

Uncharted suits the LCD screen's more natural colour balance, the lighting looks significantly better too.

Rayman shows the strength of the OLED screen, it looks very crisp, with excellent contrast ratio, and viewing angles etc.

But for anyone who is interested in getting a new Vita, it's clear the LCD screen is good.

I wonder how much they'll be when they arrive in the UK.

I can't get past the fact that all the colours on the new screen seem to have a greenish tint, it looks a bit odd. The skies look greener and the floor in Uncharted goes from looking a bit earthy to looking ..green
