Registered 7 years agoAre there any 'Tales of...' games on PSN yet? If so PSP Tales of Eternia is worth a crack.

Guys can anyone recommend a fun RPG for someone that usually doesn't do RPGs?
By that, I mean I enjoy the westernised versions and adventure games like Zelda, Fable, but always fancied trying a more RPG-y RPG but every time I try (FF13 on 360, Lost odyssey) I've found them hard to crack into. I think I'm over my phobia of turn based battles (used to hate those, but enjoyed the ones in Paper Mario 1000 year door for instance).
Anyway, my point being - the Vita might be the place for me to indulge.

@nickthegun Cheers. I'll read up on that.

Registered 10 years agoPersona 4 might be worth a shot if you can borrow a copy, as a barometer for whether you can take the talkiness of those kinds of games. It's pretty low difficulty once you work out how the battles work and once you're in, you're in after the slowish start. The PS2 game is what got me back into Japanese RPGs.
Tales is a decent shout because of the active battles and optional character development. Hopefully at least one of them is cheap but do bear in mind that Eternia is a first gen PSP game so it might have clunky fonts etc.

Registered 8 years agoCan't get Eternia on the Vita unfortunately, there's no digital version.
Half decent thread here - bit US-centric but most are available here:

Registered 2 years ago@binky Not sure how you'd find Persona 4... I'd agree that the PSP games are probably a good place to start. You might like Lunar or Trails in the Sky. Any tips for what you definitely do/don't want to see gameplay/story-wise?

It's never been released on the EU/US PSN. Possibly the Japanese one, although that's probably not much help.

I don't have an aversion to anything story wise, as long as it's engaging!
Hmm, "tales of..." Wasn't there one of those on xbox. Seem to remember playing a demo which was rather enjoyable. -

Have you played little kings story? Thats like a lite rpg and I think it's pretty good fun. Cant really advise on psp games as I haven't played the following but I had a look at some reviews and forums recently and found that trails in the sky gets highly regarded. Even more old school is alundra which is a psone game. -
I've not played Little King, no. /researches

Really must get back to this. It's so well loved around these parts, but I think I'll have difficulty getting to grips with the systems without restarting it altogether

Little King's Story... Too much of a strategy/rts slant for my liking looking at that. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Registered 10 years agoI'd probably not recommend Trails in the Sky as that is an even slower start than Persona 4 and the plans for the sequels being translated are very much up in the air. -

Looks a touch ropey in action, but the bilinear filtering option smoothes things out a bit. -

Registered 8 years agoWhile I loved trails in the sky, and would class it as one of the few jrpg s outside of the playstation Final Fantasys that I could get into, I didn't like Lunar at all. Seemed to consist of everything I didn't like about that style of game. The ys games are fun, and more Arcady then most, and I reckon Final Fantasy 9 might be good game to start with. Seems to ease you in. Persona is well worth getting, even if its a little out there at times. -
Thinking about it... is FFVII available? Wasn't it a general consensus that that was the awesomes?

Registered 8 years ago@binky yes. But wait a couple of days and you'll get it half price (£3.99). -

Registered 10 years agoYes, and there's a final fantasy sale on PSN soon. You'd be playing the slow, bordered PAL release, though, and it has aged a fair bit. It also suffers from a dodgy translation. -

Registered 8 years agoI'd recommend picking up FF 7 to 9 , great games especially at that price. Then I originally played 7 and 8 on PCM many years ago so I could be looking at them with nostalgia. A lot rave about 6, but I find it a little too old fashioned to get into. -

I'll check out some reviews/articles of those FF games mentioned, maybe one of those will float my boat at that sort of price.
Keep the suggestions coming

Just stuck NFS Most Wanted into the Vita, let it do its forced update of the firmware and now... tapping the NFS icon crashes the whole Vita and powers it off.
Fucking golfclap, Sony, you turds. -
Oh no, my mistake. ANY game causes it to crash. Actually completely unusable now. Is this a "known issue" with the firmware update or am I just really (un)lucky?

Registered 10 years ago@Phattso is this a new firmware update? I remember the last major release broke a few games but haven't heard anything on it breaking all games. If you've got Plus I'd recommend backing up all your saves, formatting the memory card and restoring. -
@Help_me it was the 1.8 something update that's actually on the NFS cart. Wouldn't let me play the game without the patch, the patch rendered my device unusable. I'm currently updating to the new 2.whatever firmware via my PC. Lucky I was at home, eh? Portable console my fucking arse.
@dominalien I don't believe in it. Power buttons should be removed and all devices should ship in the activated state.
