    Also, TR is a hell of a lot more thought-provoking than your average Arnie movie. At the end, you're still not entirely sure whether the whole thing is in his head or not.

    I'm pretty sure it was real, though.

    Yeah I think it was real as well, but it does leave it a bit open.

    The fact you see the alien atmosphere processor on screen at Rekall along with the scenario ”Wow that’s a new one, blue sky on Mars” from the tech would suggest everything after Quaid gets plugged in isn't real.

    This space left intentionally blank.

    I thought the point was that the whole experience was created for him, not something created by his brain. Painting yourself as the bad guy within that experience would be a very bad career move. He could wake up and just start killing people.

    As he does in the movie!!1

    Also, introducing a doctor who tries to convince the patient that it isn't real into the simulation could have pretty bad consequences for his mental health.

    In the commentary Verhoeven says that everything from his first trip to Rekall onwards is a dream, Arnie insists that its all real and takes it all very literally.

    I think its pretty clear that Verhoeven is right, but I always watch it like Arnie as its more fun.

    How can it be a 'dream' though? It implants a memory, so something that happened in the past. If he thinks the guy from his work was evil and he's killed him, how will his mind cope with that when he turns up to work the next day and he's there?

    The fade to white at the end is him dying, like the doctor said he would, so he hasnt got to worry about going into work the next day ;)

    At the end the clone goes back in time, in order to kill his rival's father, thus stopping him from ever being born. In the ensuing chaos, he encounters a dastardly villain clad in chainmail, with the ability to turn into a snake. After defeating this man he pushes onward, only to be thwarted by an invisible entity - who turns out to be his twin!
