The only ones I played have been Terror From the Deep (loved it back in the day) and the recent one set on Mars (was ok) but I know that there have been loads of sequels and unofficial sequels and remakes and similar so what is the best?

Don't touch any of the Cenega X-Com alikes, they're just utterly shit.

In fact stick to X-Com: Enemy Unknown and X-Com: Terror from the Deep because they're still the only ones really worth bothering with. It's a crying shame that no one's done a proper this-gen X-Com game.

He's right. The original UFO was the best. Terror From the Deep wasn't quite so good, but was almost there.

It is a shame. A massive shame :(

The first one. Second was brilliant as well, but let down occasionally by huge levels with one panicked alien that took hours to flush out. Also arriving at a terror site to find half your weapons didn't work in air was not super fun.

LB, you really are a massive geek.

The original was the best by a country mile. Terror from the Deep was exactly the same but with a blue hue - utter rip off.

More of the same - no problem for me.

Yeah, my biggest gripe with TotD was the length of the missions. Sometimes you'd play for two hours and then spend another hour hunting out the last guy. Who might then jump out and kill half your squad in the final 30 seconds.

Everyone above is correct, although the UFO:Extraterrestrials remake ain't too bad (it's free). Hope the new version will be good.

Dunno if anyone tried the GBA version of Rebelstar Raiders (similar type of thing) but it wasn't actually that bad.

If someone ever released a touch versh of this, I'd make sweet love to them down by the fire

Loved them all ( didnt like the ones that came out this century ) . For me the best had to be APOCOLYPSE . when you'd researched alien tech you could destroy massive buldings and destroy the entire map . shoot through wall and burn stuff . GREAT . and all that in 1996 . no other game I know of ( and I would like to know of more ) gives such tactical variTIONS ( damn this small keyboard ) and the glee of massive destruction . explosions are always good . and so is fire . and BIG GUNS . 2 each .
I even managed to get it to work on my last Pc running XP and with a built in non soundlaster sound card .

No market for turn based games anymore. It's a shame with so many fans, easy money for a sequel true to the first two games.

    DEE! DUH-DUH-DUH-DOO-DUH-DUH.

Fans of old DOS games should check this out, BTW:

    http://livedosgames.com

Whack the image on a USB flash drive then boot off it for loads of emulated, low-res joy.

Only thing is the website is really enormously slow at the moment as it was mentioned in this month's PC Gamer, causing half the country to eat their bandwidth.

EDIT: Oh, and it does include UFO - Enemy Unkown, which is what caused me to think of it in the first place.

Ive just downloaded UFO: Alien Invasion and I really like it. No destructible scenery (boo) but apart from that it is a worthy 3d remake of the classics. Its free too!

A few minor bugs but well worth checking out.

Bloody bloody hard as well :)

A proper UFO remake would be great. When Full Spectrum Warrior was released, the developers hinted they'd like a crack at it.

Does anyone remember Laser Squad, the prequel to UFO/X-Com? I used to play it to death. I liked it so much that I created an online multi-player version of it. See Stellar Forces if you're interested in playing. All free of course!
