New Battlefield game is going back to WW2. Hurrah!
EA is handing out postcards at a New York comic convention for Battlefield 1943: Pacific. Will apparently involve Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal and other islands. Which is cool 'cos they were some of the best. More here.

Loved 1942 (more so than any of the others in the series). But that said, do we really need any more WW2 games?

Do we really need any more modern combat games? Do we really need any more games at all?

Yes. Yes we do. We need this one.

I lost more online time to Battlefield 1942 and all its add-ons (and the utterly sublime Desert Combat mod), Battlefield Vietnam and Battlefield 2 than any other game series.

The thought of a this-gen WWII Battlefield, with an update to the Frostbyte engine, but on PC makes me positively foam at the gash.

Won't care a bugger what maps there are s'long as Wake Island is in there somewhere.

I think for battlefield WW2 is fine. I know I much preferred WW2 era planes then when the series went more modern and added jets.

Problem with adding jets (in BF Vietnam) was that most of the maps were too tiddly to make good use of 'em. So the old prop-based planes, with their slower speed, were ideal for stuff like Wake Island.

Seriously can't wait to see how this turns out. I've enjoyed my time with the Battlefield Heroes beta, so if this is anywhere near as much fun as that, it'll be golden.

Hopefully it has wonky physics and other silliness like BF1942. BF2 was far too serious. And more vehicles please. Big maps with lots of planes and jeeps (with horns obv) and aircraft carriers.

+1 to that! Some of the funniest games of BF1942 were when the physics went awry. Standing on the wing of a B-52 Bomber after jumping and accidentally landing on it as it tried to take my head off at low level = WIN!

And lest we forget, pogo-ing Nazis!

    /tuts

This would appear to be console bound rather than PC though, give us a new PC Battlefield DICE!

    Please.

    This space left intentionally blank.

Cracking news. I've got my fingers crossed that this won't be just 360/ps3 as JeuxActu but be on the PC first. Hell, those consoles don't deserve BF.

Demo shown in NY Comic Con tomorrow? Wow, that sounds like they all written a lot of the code. If i had to pick i wish it was BFV they were re-doing. I have been walking around Wake Island for at least 200 hours solid in my life. Could do with a slight change.

Apparently just 3 maps, online only.

"Using the same Frostbite™ engine, Battlefield 1943 takes players back to WWII. The game offers endless hours of 24 player multiplayer action over three classic and tropic locations; Wake Island, Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. Delivering the award-winning through-the-gun and vehicle warfare online experience DICE is best recognized for, Battlefield 1943 will have players battling in ruthless aerial dog fights and intense trench combat. Players can see the game in action at New York Comic Con (Booth #1441) from February 6th-8th."

That does however sound interesting! BF 1942 with a frostbite!

It does look good in the trailer. But why only 24 players? Hopefully that's just the console version.

Also on EG. It looks brilliant, surpassing what I was expecting.

BFV is probably my fav of the BF series. I just loved the 1960's atmosphere of the game and the ability to blare out ride of the valkyries from a huey automatically made it awesum.

I do wonder looking at what they are doing if this is not more of a map pack update for Bad Company. The 3 maps part just does not make much sense for a full BF game.

Still it looks brilliant from the video's.

Looks absolutely brilliant, although I would have liked some gameplay footage too.

And indeed, what about Battlefield: BC? I guess we now know why DICE's support is so low on that one. They're busy doing tons of other stuff!

This is the DICE that asked the full price for Mirrors Edge, the DICE that have released dire addons for all the battlefield games bar Bad Company (which was released with a single game mode).

Decent quantities of content is not their strong suit

Finishing games is not their strong suit.

I wont be buying these games.

It's an XBLA/PSN game. Check the article on the front page.

I'm assuming it's not cross platform, that'd be unfair on console players.

Of course it's not, not even Microsoft bother with cross platform anymore.

And patches too, probably. Knowing DICE you'll have to pay to get widescreen support.
