    Yee-haw!

The sequel to 2004's Red Dead Revolver, Rockstar's take on spaghetti westerns, is coming to the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 this fall, Rockstar Games announced this morning.

Red Dead Redemption is the story of former outlaw John Marston and will take place at the turn of the 20th century when the "lawless and chaotic badlands began to give way to the expanding reach of government and the spread of the Industrial Age."

"Along the way, players will experience the heat of gunfights and battles, meet a host of unique characters, struggle against the harshness of one of the world’s last remaining wildernesses, and ultimately pick their own precarious path through an epic story about the death of the Wild West and the gunslingers that inhabited it."

“The team at San Diego have massively exceeded our expectations with the sheer depth of experiences in Red Dead Redemption,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “The seamless combination of breathtaking beauty and intense action, all woven together with strong plotlines in a massive vibrant, rural environment is mind-blowing. We think this game helps to push the limits of what an open-world gaming experience can be.”

The game will use Rockstar's proprietary RAGE game engine, which was used in Table Tennis, Grand Theft Auto IV and Midnight Club: Los Angles.

The game will feature an open-world environment which will include frontier towns, wildlife-packed prairies and mountain passes.

I find the idea of a proper sandbox Western game somewhat enticing. I never played the original, though - was it any good?

I hope that it doesn't use the euphoria physics engine that would make the whole game crawl at a sub-par 30 FPS like GTA 4...

    /remembers the 1st RDR, ultra-smooth 60FPS gameplay...

I liked the original, good to hear there will be a follow-up. That 1st screenshot in the gallery looks great too.

This is good news indeed, although I'd still like to see a Gun sequel.

Superb news! The original was one of the better efforts of recreating the Wild West, imo far better than Gun and (obviousy) Call of Juarez...

Still, its not the sequel to Outlaws that I've been craving for the last decade but hey, a man can dream...

The multiplayer deathmatches were awesome in the first one! I hope they add some online multiplayer, maybe even some mmo elements.

Sounds absolutely great - loved Gun, am planning to try Juarez and enjoyed my very brief spell with the first RDR... never got long enough with it, sadly.

Intrigued by "struggle against the harshness of one of the world’s last remaining wildernesses" - wonder if they will include some kind of water-dependence for players, horses and so on.

    Oh... the possibilities!

/tries not to get too excited.

Is Red Dead Revolver similar to GUN or is it structured differently?

I played GUN to completion, and I really enjoyed it - I have heard of Red Dead but I never bothered to check it out. The screenshots on the front-page certainly do look great.

Wait, are we all saying Gun was actually good now? I thought everyone had decided it was crap. I'm confused.

    Plastic horses ftw.

Having said that though, the first few of those shots have sold me the game already.

Looks good. How was the horse riding in the original? I never played it. They could do with ripping off SotC, since that was perfect.

gun was a good concept game, it failed in a good many places but it was enjoyable and it wasn't buggy. so why slam it?

rockstar have been working on this sequel for years and years no? i thought they had an unannounced western project in the bag since at least 2005-2006?

    Huzzah!

The first one was amazing, one of those games where you kind of know it isnt perfect but it doesnt matter because when you play it, YOU. ARE. THE. MAN.

    Fuckin mint.

Wasn't the first one kind of average? It got 6/10 on EG so what is the excitement about?

I think there are a hardcore, myself included, who thought the original was vastly underrated - it was a quirky, funny, with a great spaghetti ambience, some fairly original mechanics among all the standard gunplay, and had some very varied gameplay / level design.

An update of the same quality but with current gen horsepower is a guaranteed buy for me.

    /reads article

An open world environment? That would normally make me groan, but it's a perfect step forward for Red Dead Revolver, and ideal for the old west - canyons, mesas, corrals, ranches, dustbowl towns. This could be awesome, actually, if they nail it.
