Had to move my 97 year old grandmother back to living on her home when she'd shattered her hip. She fucking hated the retirment home and was wasting away. It's as much her choice at 97 as it would have been at 17. She knows the risks and can make the call herself.
Edit: Also, not the budgie... :(

I 100% agree with this as long as the elderly person is still 'with it'. If they are not though, well, that makes it slightly more difficult.

Even if they are 'with it' they are still brittle and breakable. If they have family or friends close by who can check on them regularly then fine but there are so many who dont see anybody sometimes for weeks.

    @twelveways

I do understand what you're getting at but don't you feel it's a little insulting to tell a person that you know better than they do regarding how they should live their lives? As SirScratchy said, they are adults and as long as they are not mentally infirm, it should be their choice.

Hey, just my opinion, thats all.

Besides, im pretty sure I know the modern world better than any octogenarian does, fighting Nazis on the beaches 60 years ago is very different to fending off, with your zimmer frame, 14 yr old rat boys on a mission to shit on your bed.

Sometimes people need to be told what is best for them.

Well, perhaps you'll feel differently if you make it to such an age.

Maybe we should allow OAPs to be armed, give them a fighting chance. Being old shouldn't mean that they should be forced into a retirement home just because there are scum that will try and rob them. Even being a bit frail doesn't mean they should have their lives dictated to them.

Its not about dictating their lives, its about looking after them.

The amount of scum is rising and their morals are dropping, people generally dont want their elderly relatives living with them and many old people live lives of solitude and fear, living in council flats or on rough estates with scum on all sides.

less jobs = more unemployment = more crime

Shouldn't we be trying to reduce the numbers of scum rather than dumping old people in homes - don't they have say in the matter?

We don't negotiate with terrorists, why should we give in to some spotty little prick with a knife?

Because the police in Britain are fucking useless, the general level of parenting and education is even worse.

You're missing the point, we should be addressing the cause to reduce the problem, not hiding the targets so somebody else gets robbed.

Then surely, you and I should also be confined to a safe locked building against our will? I mean, you stand the same chance against a bullet to the face/knife through the chest as an old person...little to none.

    Whatever.

Old people living lonely sad lives is obviously ok with you.

My grandparents are lucky enough to have their family around them looking after them, if they werent then I know I would have no problem putting them in a home/village.

You obviously haven't been reading enough newspapers - people are getting gunned down and knifed left, right and centre in BROKEN BRITAIN.

No need to get childish about it, is there? I said the elderly should have a choice, hence if they feel 'sad and lonely' they can go to a retirement home, no problem, but if their independence is still important to them, they can stay living in a surrounding that they are comfortable in.

That's what gets me, Twelveways doesn't seem to understand that in many cases, a persons independence is the last thing they have left, the last thing of importance to them. To forcefully take that away from a proud and healthy minded person would be absolutely wrong.

I'm quite sure he will see it differently when he gets a little older.
