I was just reading a slightly old BBC article by Coulthard and read this statement: BBC article

"Five kilos is nearly 0.2 seconds a lap. That's about the average difference between Vettel and his former team-mate Mark Webber in qualifying - and it's also not far off the weight difference between them."

This was in relation to Hulkenberg being looked over by McLaren for being too tall. I don't see why weight makes a difference, height yes, but weight? The F1 cars have to be a certain weight when they come in after a race, so I assume all teams budget for the cars to be just above it. Some add ballast to ensure this I thought? Surely they just add less to the heavier team mates. So if both cares come in at 550kg then where is the penalty? Or is the problem that it restricts what can be done on the car?

The penalty is weight distribution. If your weight is in your driver, you can't distribute ballast around the car for handling improvements.

Also, I think some heavier drivers do just end up being heavier with no ballast at all.

The weigh Driver+Car, which is why you see them weighing the drivers+helmets immediately after the race, and why they run the cars through the marbles to pick up bits of rubber. Without fuel, the Car+Driver has to be a minimum amount.

Lighter driver also means they can put more fuel in, and thereby run the engine harder for longer (no need for shortshifting at the end of the race).

And there has to be enough fuel left to get a sample out.

    Sam Michael.

Wasn't he the kiss of death at Williams. Move to Mclaren. Coincidence?

My guess for McLaren over the next few years:

Dennis in, Martin out, Ross in, Jenson out, Lewis in.

So I thought I'd look at the odds for F1 before testing starts to see who the bookies favour and unsurprisingly it's Vettel. The odd thing is they have everyone else behind by a hefty big margin...

    Vettel - 10/11
    Hamilton - 4/1
    Alonso - 5/1
    Raikkonen - 10/1
    Rosberg - 14/1
    Button - 20/1
    Ricciardo - 22/1

Other notables are Grosjean at 35/1 and Massa at 100/1.

The differences between all the team mates (except Red Bull) are bigger than I expected them to be too. I can't see Hamilton having that much of an advantage over Rosberg for instance.

The odds don't necessarily represent likely performance. The margin between Hamilton and Rosberg is clearly small, but you'd have to say that it's far more likely that Hamilton would come out on top of that over the year.

Do Ron Dennis and Ross Brawn even get on? Seems unlikely to me.

Sell Vettel at 10/11 and buy Ricciardo at 22/1 seems to be a decent trade. Over the season it's very unlikely he'd beat Vettel but there's a good chance in a good car he's pretty close and those odds will close up. He's a quick driver and experiened now, so I doubt he kicks off a second behind Vettel. Also you've got the upside of the Red Ball cars being rubbish. In which case you might end up with a 40/1 on Vettel and Riccardo would only be a 50/1 or something.

Nah, Riccardo's not going to do well - his recruitment to replace fellow Australian Mark Webber is part of an on-going joke by Red Bull owner and Austrian Helmut Marko. He basically resents Australia for having an "a" and "l" over Austria, and this is his sick, perverted way of getting back at them. The weirdo.

Am I wrong/making this shit up? Well, I stated Lewis would be joining Mercedes 4 months before anyone else, and have called out Mclaren on their car's advertising.

So the rumours that merc have a space rocket for 2014, any substance or have they come from merc/ Hamilton fanboys?

Rumours based on Mercedes' apparent confidence in the paddock compared with the bricks the other teams seem to be laying about this year. Multiple team principles have said so.

I can see a McLaren 2005 situation happening this year at Mercedes; where they have a car capable of warp speed, but none of the reliability to go along with it. Watch for Vettel pulling an Alonso and inheriting umpteen wins from the runaway leader throughout the season.

I guess it's asking a bit much for Renault to produce a hand grenade. Although with Webber gone maybe Red Bull aren't going to be so select about parts. ;)

Also of note - it's the Daytona 24 Hours this weekend. The level of talent on tap this year across the Pro classes is verging on ridiculous.

Kobayashi is fucking nuts! Welcome back to F1 :-)

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

    KAAAMMMUIII! :D

He's already proven to have the biggest balls before the first GP by turning down a new Ferrari contract just so he could race.

Sadly he's in a Caterham so therefore he'll be right at the back and we'll never see his antics on screen.

I hope Merc have done something special this year, another year of Vettel driving off into the sunset will just about kill F1 for me.
