Actually i'd be surprised if it wasn't wider than that... Merc provides a lot of engines.....

It might give other teams a chance to catch up, testing wise, but it's not much of a punishment. They do not really lose out as a result.

What a farce. Only loser is Sam Bird their test driver who had nothing to do with any of it.

merc's lawyering was top notch, and potentially the threat of Pirelli's lawyering also being top notch should it come to some sort of contractual dispute in a real court may have influenced the thinking...

won't merc actually lose more from missing three days of testing with the current car and current tyres, than they gained with three days testing with the current car and unknown prototype tyres though?

I've got to say, after all the details it seems a far more innocent event than I thought. Pirelli were in trouble, Mercedes genuinely wanted to help by the looks of it.

I was watching the qualifying last night, 200mph in the dark is quite terrifying.

Well, from what you could see of the cars that is. The director seemed far more interested in showing slow mo's of random people around the pit lane.

Yeah, the Le Mans director did seem to be addicted to fast cuts and boring pit lane footage.

the eurosport overage is too annoying. lets go to an advert as soon as the green flag comes up, after the 398th red flag of the session. time and time again

The commentators are a mixed bag as well. Some of them are pretty good, some of them make Crofty seem bearable.

I've just won a ticket to Silverstone for next Sunday through my work. Does anyone have any advice/pointers/help?

Travelling down from Edinburgh is going to be a bitch, isn't it? I'm sure it will be worth it though.

The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine.

    general admission or seated?

Th Complex lets you get a nice long look at the cars but at low speed. maggots / Becketts lets you appreciate how insane the cars are but there's not a lot else to see.

ps. you won't believe the noise

    Seated. Becketts Grandstand.

Mrs_M has informed me about the noise. It's a shame it's only a single ticket, as she got me back into F1.

becketts grandstand is very good as you can see just how mad the cars are through there (lap one is great) and you're also high enough to see over the other side once the cars come back. very nice spot.

if you can possibly afford it i'd suggest the fanvision kit you can get there for keeping informed about the race, if not a radio and earphones.

a shame it is only one ticket but enjoy it - its a a brilliant experience. jealous!

    hope the weather behaves.

When an Aston can punch a hole in an unprotected metal crash barrier, spin back out on to the track and lose a door in the process... ouch.

Good raving so far despite that long SC period but I think the endurance aspect for the veiwer actually refers to enduring the horrendous commentary on Eurosport and the directing on the feed...

I miss the few glorious years Motors TV had the race as they just used Radio Le Mans for the comms.

Such a shame the Corvettes are off the pace this year, they've always been my highlight just on sound alone.

Quite shocked to hear this, it looked a big accident but wow. wonder how much of a part the armco failing and the trees behind had to play, if any.

hmm, looking at the on-board from the car following him it's more understandable :(

    RIP Allan Simonson. Awful news.

Just seen the accident on YouTube from the car behind. There didn't seem to be any contact with another driver, the car swerved and lost control then left the track. Didn't see the impact - I don't think that was caught on camera. But the car looked a mess after the hit.

Unfortunately just one of those Motorsport things, and a reminder why we have such big run offs on purpose built tracks

After looking at a satellite image of the track.
Where he went off and the way he went off, there's a big chance that he could have hit the barriers head on. :-(
