Let me correct that. Mercedes are taking the piss. Talk about sandbagging.

Wow...bit silly from Lewis not to go out, but as a fan I can't say I'm too upset with that.

Wow. It's going to be very interesting to see if their race pace has improved

Nah he was down on tyres after that lock up in q2 - had to do that to have parity with the rest of the pile

One lap wonders. Whoever out of Vettel, Alonso or Raikkonen sails past the Mercedes' first will run away with it tomorrow.

superb! Tommorow is going to be interesting.

Have to say though, to block out the front row at test circuit central really does Bodes well for rest of season.

The previous 4 races of woeful race pace doesn't though...

It had a dip at the start, but Lewis' race pace a Bahrain was superb overall.

He was nowhere for half of the race!

Fairly meaningless if you can't have good pace for the entire race though. You'll still never come close to the top 3.

Details. He made plenty of places at the end of the day.

I could make plenty of places if I spend half of a race considerably slower than everyone else too. :D

Yeah, but Nico couldn't manage it, so clearly he had something going on. After his penalty he said he was targeting to gain places and get 5th, and he managed to do that.

Different setups innit. Especially given Hamilton's car would have been setup with the penalty in mind.

They'll both be somewhere in the middle of the points places by lap 7 or 8. If anything it's spoiling races a little as it is fast becoming a game of 'who can clear the Mercedes and gallop off into the distance first'.

Did nothing come out of Pirelli about that delamination of his tyre? News was that it was a tyre fault rather than debris.

I don't think it will be as bad as it was in Bahrain though

Watching gp3 and gp2 it's clear how much drs is ruining the racing in f1

@shamblemonkee no no. Drs does not ruin the racing because the airflow of f1 cars means you can't get the closeness of gp2. If the rules were to change to make the airflows tow rather than obstruct then it wouldn't be needed though.

ok, remind me of that tomorrow after the mercs fall backwards with little fighting due to drs.

for surei remember the days before drs and all that due to how sensitive the cars are to airflow. but i think the tyres are sufficient to generate enough performance differential these days. DRS is destroying the spectacle of racing in F1 - the cars just pass each other, there's much less of an art to passing and defending these days

@shamblemonkee the lack of art is more down to more restrictions on defence. I agree drs should be tweaked so it does not allow easy passing, it should overcome the negative effect of airflow and little more. But after years of impossible to pass dynamics it's nice to see cars actually passing again. If they are fast enough that they wouldn't have been easily passed anyway, they will be within the des zone themselves on the next lap.

i know but for me seeing cars get by so easily is just as boring as seeing them sit behind unable to pass. the excitement has always been in the defence and aggression of holding or taking track space. focing the other driver to maximise exit and so on.

It can be quite boring, but imagine if the race tomorrow was set so that Lewis was under orders to let Nico go and hold up the rest of the field for as long as possible. It'd be crap.

Vettel's two passes at the start of the last race were pretty impressive and because of the tyre problems we've had quite a few good non DRS passes this season.

Mr Pirelli claimed it was debris, and claimed it was a straight up design choice between delamination and straight up puncture.

Just caught up with the quali here. Well, I didn't expect that, in pretty much every regard. Do wonder if that quick third sector can help Merc at all - as others have said, the Red Bulls and Ferraris and maybe even Lotus will be all over them in the first two sectors, but quali has shown that they can be quicker over the full lap. If they can not fuck each other up too much by fighting, a Merc 1 2 finish is not inconceivable.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

Convenient how it's always debris according to Pirelli. Should be a more independent examination when it comes to the tyres, really.
