Registered 4 years agoThe Mercedes is actually looking quietly great. Not setting the fastest times, but setting brilliant times considering the harder compounds and higher fuel loads.
Lewis' performance on the hards was brilliant, and Nico is one hell of a grafter. It would not surprise me if they nailed Melbourne by racing hard on the harder compounds (considering their devotion during testing) while others nurse their softs.
At 16:1, I reckon Lewis to win in Aus is worth a cheeky fiver. -

Registered 8 years agoThe issue with Mercedes will be keeping up with the top teams throughout the season. Can see them starting brightly (like last season really), but then it's whether they can stay up there. I have a sneaky feeling rbr are going to be comfortably quickest straight off the bat, particularly now they don't have a trick exhaust to spend half a season figuring out -

Even though we all know you can't take anything for granted, you normally know which teams are looking good and which teams are struggling. Some how the BBC have come to the conclusion that Mclaren are looking like the team to beat. Would like that to be true, but it's complete guess work.3DS: 4210 4002 8289 (Dave)

Registered 8 years agoDon't Mclaren have some kind of testing crisis every year?
I'm still not convinced Mercedes will do anything either, after all the team hasn't proven it can keep up with the big boys through the mid-season development race since they had that really good year as BAR. As someone noted earlier in this thread, they only won as Brawn due to dominance in the first half and got blown into the weeds by the end of it all.
Kimi/Grosjean is probably the strongest pairing on the grid so hopefully Lotus have made those few tenths up. -

Registered 8 years agoYeah benson is amazing really. He seems to have reasonably good access but is usually completely wide of the mark in almost everything he writes.
At this point last year, it seemed mclaren very strong and rbr were struggling a bit but I think testing was genuinely a bit mental last year because of the tyres. Could be the same thing again but mclaren certainly don't seem to be very happy. Red bull are just ominously quite and Mercedes seem to want to downplay themselves all the time, which is probably because they know they aren't as fast as people are making out. Lotus seem very strong, Ferrari a bit less than that. Williams who knows. Not really bothered about the rest. Di resta seems to have gone a bit mental.

Registered 8 years agoVery true, but the car was developed from very early on the previous season with lots of Honda cash.
They did an amazing job with what they had and you're right about the budget, if Honda had hung around it would have probably been a Ferrari style steamroller. BAR/Honda were incredibly patchy though and for some reason Brawn hasn't really changed that. -
