I wanted to go bowling but the bowling alleys were all booked so the Cinema was the closest other option and they didn't seem up for playing some of the arcade games in there. I now know why people say cinema on a first date is a baaad idea!

Afternoon coffee or evening drink/meal in the future, pal.

    You're not 15.

    Hopefully she wasn't either.

Cinema is fine as long as that's not all you do. Film then drink equals something to talk about to get past the awkward conversation phase.

Take them to see a porno.

If you need the cinema for something to talk about, then you're fucked from day one.

Cinema is not a date. I've only gone there with girls I've been seeing for a while; when we've been in a relationship and it's a shitty day with nothing to do.

Seems like I continue to be an anomaly.

Though we didn't decide to go to the cinema until after we'd had lunch. Plus it probably had a more positive effect due to it being a Thai romantic comedy... Showing a willingness to integrate with the local culture.

But cinema gives you something to get past the initial nervous bit. It's a fine way to start talking before moving onto the other stuff.

If you go see a film and go home, that's crap.

I don't understand the problem with seeing a film then going for a drink/dinner afterwards for a first date.

Don't recall anyone saying they need the cinema as a talking point. Lighten up casanova.

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

  • Deleted user 9 September 2012 11:41:23
Yeah I thought going to the cinema for a first date was good as you have a talking point... If you want/need it.

Cinemas are where you go when you no longer need to impress anyone with your great chat or face.

First dates in a cinema are an awful idea. Unless your date has some weird fetish for men who sit next to them in cinemas. Then it's a great idea.

So, logically, if you don't have great chat and/or face, cinema is the place to go.

It will be fine as long as its a good photo, showing the full body and face from front on and with no artistic bollocks. Also, make sure there is a newspaper in the picture with a recent date on it, or it might be someone reliving their former glory...

I once saw someone on Facebook who was a mutual friend of loads of people I knew. They looked quite attractive so I clicked on their profile and realised who it was. Must have taken her ages to find the one angle and the exact camera settings which didn't make her look like a whale.

But you never know, some people are more attractive in person than they are in a photo...
I'm wary of POF tbh. Met a couple of girls back in 2009-10 who obviously wanted to hide their size using trickery!

Still - don't be put off, just ask for more pics on IM/ MSN or whatever and have fun! It's only a date.

I felt quite sorry for this one girl on POF. She changed her title to "am I that horrible", it was really quite sad. Then again, er, well you can guess. She wasn't that bad..

My dates been cancelled anyhoo. Found a cool looking girl who describes herself as a geek. Captain, we have a new target.

Hate to be brutal, but definitely agree. Each to their own, but you're not spending time together during the film. If you want to talk about movies, just mention the last good one you've seen. Else you could be more interesting and come up with something better to talk about. Don't like restaurants either. Watching people eat isn't very pleasant, neither is trying to talk while eating.

Best first date for me for someone I didn't really know would be the bar/pub. Casual, chance to speak and you would be under zero pressure to spend more than an hour with the person. If it worked out then you could move onto something else. It didn't you (or her) could make an excuse and leave.

Tho perhaps I am biased given that the pub/parties are the places I've found most of the girls I've dated.

Apparently us. I don't know why. Without them I wouldn't currently feel like I've been repeatedly stabbed through the chest and set on fire. I might've actually slept the last two nights. So not worth it. And yet I'd do it all again in a heartbeat.

Errr...alright I guess. I've been on a simple coffee date before and that went well so I'll make sure to do it next time I hook up, whenever that will be!
