    Is there anybody out there with a spare kit who could share the love and lend it to me? I just bought a 120g HD on Ebay and I need the kit to transfer my account/data across. I'm aware that you can ask MS to send you one, but you need to provide a serial number for 2 consoles as they assume that you are transferring from an arcade/core to an elite (Which I'm not) Therefore they annoyingly, won't send me a kit.

    I rang up MS customer support and told them that the 120G standalone HD I'd just bought was won by a friend on a US website. As my transfer disk was NTSC it wouldn't work on my 360, so they sent me a PAL kit within 3 days, no questions asked.

    True story.

    Just sold mine on ebay for £20, as I would assume everyone else has, it's a great way to offset the cost of the upgrade, mine ended up costing me £8 after I'd sold the 20GB HDD and the kit.

    Seems to go for less in Germany... Mine will sell tomorrow, maybe I should have included international shipping?

    Hm, maybe I was too honest with the goon on the end of the phone. I told him I'd bought a 2nd hand HD and he said he could only send a cable if I had upgraded to an elite console. Think he was upset (on behalf of MS) that I dared to buy 2nd hand and am clearly destroying their miniscule profit margins....

    Oh well, looks like ebay then. I refuse to pay over 20 quid for it though and I've just seen about half a dozen sell for between 22 and a ridiculous 35 quid!! So anyone willing to sell one to me for 20 quid delivery included, PM me! I guess I can always ebay it myself when I'm done with it.

    Or you could, I don't know, buy one off ebay, use it for the 20 miutes it takes to transfer the data then whack it back on ebay the same day? You might even get more than you paid for it in the current NXE upgrade frenzy.

    My thoughts exactly, but I'd still feel like a total mug if I paid over 20 quid for one, just on principle! So if there are any trustworthy Eurogamers out there willing to deliver one to me for 20 shiny new pounds on the button, transferred direct via PayPal, lets do a deal!

    The kit that came with my 120GB didn't recognise my 60GB and I had to buy a memory card to transfer.

    Maybe they have new kits now? I dunno.

    If you have bought a new 60gb HD fully packaged by MS then it should come with the cable and transfer kit. If you've just bought the HD second hand like i have, then you're in the same boat as me and you'll have to get a cable off ebay for a stupid price.

    and yes, I'm surprised M$ haven't cottoned on and just started selling the damn things for a tenner a pop!

    You don't get the cable with the 60gb as it's aimed at Core owners.

    I'm thinking of buying a 60gb 360 to replace my noisy aging 20gb one, and I notice Microsoft now advertise license migration. If I'm reading this correctly, I just enter the old and new serial numbers, and then I can download all my information onto the new 360. Therefore I don't need the data cable, etc.

    Is this right?

    yes and no.

    It means anything bought and tied to the old machine gets it's liscence transfered so it can be re-downloaded on the new machine.

    However you have to remember what you've downloaded and get it individually via the market place and it doesn't apply to game saves etc.

    Your profile contains a download history, you can simply select the items you want to download again.

    but of course!! - that may well be the only solution needed (except transferring a stupid not transferable save like Fable II, or if someone wanted to keep any mp3's or homemade theme pics, then I can't see a way around except for the migration kit)

    you'll need to use the recover gamertag option or whatever it's called via XBL

    Excellent - thanks for your help with this. So it sounds like I don't need the data cable, unless I want to copy over some saved games.

    Finally managed to get a data cable off ebay for 20 quid inc postage. Still think I got bummed, but I'll just shove it right back on ebay afterwards and hopefully recover my moolah!

    Well, that worked swimmingly well! Have now installed Fallout 3, Fable II, FIFA 09, GoW2, Saints Row 2 and the Orange Box to my new 120gb HD and its a hell of a lot quieter when playing! Now to stick the cable and my old 20gb hard drive on ebay to try and claw back some of my hard earned cash! God bless Capitalism...

    Gah! MS support are fucking useless. Just bought a 60gb drive & phoned to get a data migration cable, the imbecile on the phone was adamant that the drive should have came with a cable in the box. No matter how many times i told him it didn't, & wasn't supposed to, he kept telling me to contact the retailer i bought it from. Fucking clownshoes!

    The guy didn't have a clue. Kept going off to 'investigate' then came back saying the same thing. I'm gonna ring the fuckers back.

    Edit: Bastards cut me off! Gah! Spouted the same shit about how it should have been in the pack then cut me off when i told them that it shouldn't. FFS!

    Ah well, I am picking up a 120GB HDD tomorrow. Early christmas present and will have to wait 10 days for the transfer kit to arrive. Nevermind. I'll just have to wait before I use the goodness.
