Just finished the book and it is excellent, but I'm not sure it's best suited to the cinematic format, I think it would be better as a big budget TV-series (like Lost and 24). Like most adaptations I'm worried the detail and the heart will be lost in the drive towards bigger explosions.

Also found this really cool bit of Concept art of Yonkers.

You could make an entire film out of the Sub captain story alone.

That's a very cool piece of art. The film has a good chance though, Marc Foster's a good director apart from Quantum of Solace.

It could be the Rashomon of zombie films.

Brad Pitt owns the film, it's being produced by Plan B, his production company.

I'd rather he didn't put his well known face in this.

I think this would have worked better as a TV series or an HBO miniseries. With a Band of brother like intro to each episode/book chapter by the character who will be the focus of the episode.

I agree the structure of the book will be hard to put in film, and would be better suited to a tv show, but films are where the budgets are, and I don't think this amazing story could be done on the cheap to be honest. Either you have loads of extras, with a high level of make up, and to play all the soldiers, or it will end up like I Am Legend, terrible, unbelievable cgi.
Also, the excellent comic Walking Dead has the tv show covered on the autumn. Really hoping that will live up to the source materiel.

Started reading this again last night at about 10pm and I am already half way through it. I can't put it down.

There are some rumours about that it's all still going ahead in movie form for summer 2012. I really hope they do it justice as the book is epic.

The movie is in "turnaround" iirc, which is when a studio shelves it, puts it up for sale for what it's cost them so far and only re-visits it when they can get the mix right.

It had a good script by all accounts but the Directors kept changing, Watchmen ended up in this boat for decades but I hope someone grabs this by the horns soon, Matt Reeves would be a great pick imho.

It needs one of those Directors / Producers with a strong vision to come in and not piss about on "do they run or not?" which was part of the problem with the last guy, he was changing his mind throughout by first having shamblers, then feeling they wouldn't be able to take over the world moving it to "sort of runners" etc...

Children of Men has been constantly referenced when reading the script, so that's one good point so far.

It's been greenlit actually I think. Marc Forster is directing. Brad Pitt is starring and his production company, Plan B, is erm producing.

    So, there you go.

That was 2008, since them Foster has left and Pitt was never staring, at least as far I read.

Read on: Max Brooks apparently said at Comic Con that it was still on (with Pitt and Foster) and due for 2012

You HAVE to read it, I read the early draft of the script and as good as it was they cannot do some of it justice without a massive budget.
  • Deleted user 30 September 2010 16:07:59
    I...read...every...word...so...it...might....take...me
    ...longer...than...most...thanks....for...the...info...though.

That was tiring, I'll be getting that now then as I'll need something to tide me over when I'm in the US if I finish Phlebas.

    MERCI.
