World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King launches tonight at midnight.

If anyone's tempted to return to the game, or to start from scratch, there are lots of Eurogamer forum regs and non-regs who play the game and it would be great to see some new people get involved. We are a tremendously friendly and mature bunch of people who never indulge in silly drama* so it's your lucky day. We have people playing at all abilities and all levels.

If you are interested in playing Alliance, there is an EG guild (EGean Popular Front) on Darkmoon Faire (RP-PvE); PM otto or SmoothMartin for details, or post in this thread. There are also several EGers on The Venture Co (RP-PvP), there's a guild (New Level) which is currently dormant but ready for reanimation for Alliance PvPers. If you want to play Horde, a bunch of EGers play in the Wen Tzu Enclave on Bloodscalp (though the guild is not currently recruiting, so scope for a new EG horde guild if people are up for it).

Wen Tzu is currently closed for business unfortunately. By all means say hello here or at www.wen-tzu.co.uk but can't promise anything unless we know you quite well or you wear a bra.

I'm thinking of getting the game, so I'd be a newbie, would it be worth getting the lot or just the original game? Aren't most of the expansions for high level play?

Nah. Borgus is still around. He is GM now, as a matter of fact.

yes to a certain degree, but without the first expansion, you wouldnt be able to play as a Blood Elf, or Dranaei, or in their respective starter areas which were new to that expansion. And with the 2nd Expansion, you get the Death Knight class. This is all not including the level caps being raised to 70, then to 80, and also the new professions Jewel Crafting, and now Inscription.

But yes, it is possible to just play the original!

It is cheap as chips to get at least the first expansion in a package with the original though. So I see little point in not getting at least that to start with. And then WotLK when you approach 70.

Are they any good? I do like the look of both races to be fair.

The problem I have with MMO's is being spoilt for choice, I want to try and do everything. :(

There is little difference between the races beyond cosmetics, unless you are serious about Min/maxing for high end PvE or PvP. the racials only bring minor differences, and some restrictions to what classes you can play.

Isn't that the best part of the game? That's what I heard.

The end game is what I really like about the game. To do well in it the various racials don't really matter all that much though, unless you aspire to be in some ultra hardcore raiding guld with manadtory six days a week raiding schedules or want to compete in the very highest Arena brackets.

YAY a genuine newb on the first page of the thread. :)

Get the lot, for sure - there will be bundles soon enough. The first expansion lets you play more races and has the best starting zones, and you'll want the second expansion before too long to join everyone in Northrend once you level up. Lich King will also offer the option of starting a Death Knight at level 55 (but you'll need to have levelled another character from 1-55 to unlock that).

edit - or just read what everyone else wrote before me. :p

If anyone is planning on joining a EG alliance guild I'd avoid New Level it's pretty much dead at the moment like Friday Night with Jonathan Ross.
