I disagree on both counts. It looks old, but it doesn't look bad. It doesn't even look that old.

Though I suppose that depends on if you're playing it on the PC or Xbox. I found the Xbox morrowind quite dire and the PC one still quite lush.

I think Ocarina of Time looks alright. :/ Obviously it's dated, but I can still play the game without ever thinking "god this looks shite" at any point.

Supercars 2 on the amiga still plays a great game. Nice graphics with the sprite movement on the car, particularly on the cambers and jumps.

Stunt car racer still gives me that stomach in mouth feeling... And I love it. I'd love a 60 fps version.

    SF2 Turbo on the SNES.
We still drag it out and have 5 hour marathon Ken VS Ken battles.... And on top of everything, this version has the best ever "SHORYUKEN!" and "HADOKEN!" speech in any SF game.

Also the WWF No Mercy is still by far the best EVER wrestling game (apart from mybe Firepro) on any console.
Beats any Smackdown VS raw game and the shitty Impact! game hands down!!

+1 to this. N64 is awful now, and so is PSX stuff.

N64 was awful THEN. As was the PSX once the 3DFX became affordable in 1997-8.

    That's why I didn't buy!

Goldeneye plays like shit nowadays. That said, Perfect Dark still holds its own.

Ahhhhh, people who insist on referring to the PlayStation 1 as PSX...

Any Netflix library in the world for a couple of quid a month? Gimme!

Monkey Island 1 and 2 are still excellent, take all the early Lucas Arts games - their pixel art is very charming. The wit is alive and well.

In my experience, games which one has played oneself and enjoyed are still doing well for the most part but it's difficult to appreciate an old game if it's the first time for someone.

I played the PS1 version of Metal Gear Solid earlier in the year and it holds up very well. The graphics are obviously blocky but the sound is excellent and it plays well. I found it far less clunky control wise than MGS4.

This. Despite my backlog of current games, I booted up RE2 yesterday and ended up playing for about 3 hours. Maybe I'm biased because I love the game so much, but I do think it's held up very well. The initial CGI intro isn't great these days, but once you get into the meat of the game it looks suprisingly pretty. Yes, everything's low res and the characters look pretty simple, but there's a faded photo look to the backgrounds that make it look unique. A lot of the environments are very pretty.

I wish more games were like this now. You find a certain object. Object goes in specific opening on a statue. You know where to put it because of a document you found earlier in the game. If you didn't read it, it'll be either guesswork, or you'll find the original document and by that time, you'll know the game a lot better. These days as soon as you found the object there'd be an arrow on screen telling you where to go...

I just finished GoW HD last week and, admittedly with a fresh coat of paint, its still brilliant. Its amazing to think that this level of epicness could be squeezed onto the PS2.

I bet when SH came out it was the impressive one. Now it looks awful next to RE1/2/3. It's still very playable, though. I played it for the first time a few years ago and the visual crap didn't bother me much.

    Systems that have aged well/badly

The larger portion of the N64 back catalogue due to diabolically low frame rates. I can't believe I actually bought all that superior 64 Bit platform garbage back in 97/98, there's no point pushing the graphics that hard if all you get to play is a slideshow.

Meanwhile the at the time disdained PS1 has aged better, a lot of games hit 60FPS or 30FPS, even the ones pushing the graphics, like Omega Boost. There are a plethora of exclusive 2D games that still look fantastic if the 3D doesn't cut it for you.

The PS1 was in hindsight a much better balanced, more versatile system, the N64 for all it's power must have been severely bottlenecked if the games are any indication, why oh why did I buy the N64?

My favourite thing on the N64 was letting a load of poison gas grenades off on perfect dark and watch it turn into a slide show.

I played the first two SH games through for the first time last year. The first game does indeed look awful, but it's absolutely drenched in atmosphere. They really made the best of what they had.

    Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines

The graphics and gameplay have aged as well as Mickey Rourke's face.

The plot and dialogue, on the other hand, are smooth as the day they were prematurely birthed.

Why do I see no mention of Doom in this thread?

Or have my eyes aged badly?

Was watching some Goldeneye footage on the N64 last night via YouTube.

Brings back so many memories, was someone going through the facility level, the best by fae.

Hasn't aged too bad. The guards AI is shocking by today's standards. You shoot one and other one right next to him doesn't move. The faces of Bond and Sean Bean are brilliant. They have just been photo shopped on.

There is something pretty cool about the road texturing effects on any PS1 and Saturn racing game.

Oh, and tekken 2 with its angular polygons still looks good.

Yeah. I actually think most things have aged badly from the amiga era, esp compared to how arcade and 8-bit platform games have aged. Some rare things like Cannon Fodder stand out, but a lot if it is pretty shonky.
I used to remember things like Project X and Superfrog being awesome. Now they look horrible.

Shenmue has aged very badly. I still love it unconditionally, but I dread to imagine what I'd make of it if I was playing it for the first time now.

Especially now you can slap the Morrowind overhaul onto it.
