I bought the XBOX 360 S 250Gb version, and i have no trouble what so ever with it, played GTA IV for a whole afternoon, and despite of the fact that the fan inside kicked a fair amount of heat, the console didn't fail.
I hope that they'll overcome these issues when next-gen consoles are launched.

Heh, I thought that my spare Arcade model (used by my girlfriend's little nephew and niece) was completely screwed - the thing just wouldn't power up.

I was close to arranging a repair, when I noticed that one of the USB ports at the front of the console was completely broken. On closer inspection I could see that the metal pins were so badly bent that they were touching the metal casing - possibly causing it to 'short' in the process. Used a paper-clip to bend them back and powered up the system - BLAM - it's working again. That's saved me at least 40! 40 which I can now waste on Lego or 'puter games.

I'm going to tape up the USB ports at the front so that they can't do any more damage - but does anyone know if a standard USB splitter will work in the single USB port at the back of the console? I need it for a wired controller AND a USB stick with their profiles/saved games etc. I also bring around my profile on a USB stick for co-op action.

    Howdy folks.

Is there any reliable alternative to sending back to MS for repair?

Had mine since 2007 so not under RROD warranty, and because their call centre appears to be in India they have no power to do anything but follow a script sheet.

I am left with three options:

    1. MS repair 75
    2. Pre-owned machine of same spec from Game 75
    3. Another method of repair ?

I can't really afford the first two at the moment so any suggestions welcome!

They said 90 over phone or 75 online, so I hazard they will just tell me it's 90 if I can't fill it in. Thanks though.

As soon as it went to an Indian call centre I knew there would be no chance of a free repair. Which is frustrating given it's a flaw that has been there from manufacturer.

There were assorted dodgy shops / small ads offering a repair / the ability to play 'backups' for 40 or so when mine broke down the other year, so that might be worth a look depending on where you live?

My original 360 looks like it's finally giving up the ghost. Not up on the latest hardware, what's the deal with buying an Arcade model - can you transfer the contents of the old hard drive to a USB stick or something and use it in the Arcade? Or would I be better just getting a new slim?

Quick question I should probably know the answer to and yet don't. I want to put my x-box account, ie everything thats on my HDD onto my shiny new 250gb blank HDD. How exactly do I do that?

you need to transfer it from your existing HD, either by using a succession of flash drives or buying a transfer kit (approx 15)

If the spammer deleted himself the messages would remain wouldn't they? Sneaky tactic or just strangeness afoot?

Hi all. My original launch 360 is starting to play up - very loud fan noise after 1-2 minutes of powering up, and last night I got the first overheat rrod.

I was thinking of buying a replacement fan unit, as they're only 5 quid or so, but if the unit is really loud, surely the fans are working and something else is causing it to overheat?

Anyone had an overheat rrod and got round it somehow?

(I've done the starting things like keep it horizontal, plenty of space around it etc etc)

    Hey ol' buddies!

My original 360 just gave me a rrod, switched it off and on again and it's working ok. It's been a bit flakey recently but I'm surprised it's lasted this long. Does an rrod mean certain impending doom?

    Cheers

Wow in Xbox years your machine must be 200 years old ;) and yes it will die very soon, just let it go...let it go!

I'm afraid so mate. Normally it works for a bit, you will then have permanent rrod.

    Sniff...sniff...

After all this time I feel slightly daft buying a new one, especially with all the shiny new hardware around.

As you say new hardware is here, but on the upside there will be plenty of cheap secondhand 360's.
