Final Fantasy X is a good starter.
DDS is good! However Persona 3 shits all over it from a distance. AND I am personally prefering Lucifers Call to DDS (I'ts darker, the story however isnt as strong).

Also; do yourself a favour and just get Final Fantasy VII and IX (and then VIII!).

DOOOO IT.

Also; FFXII isnt action based. It's turn based but without random battles and with mmorpg elements.

Final Fantasy 7/8/9 if you're counting PS1 games too

Or you can buy Persona 3: FES on Friday. That's turn based... I also recommend Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2.

Shadow Hearts is a good RPG series as well.

Really can't beat Persona 3 as Chrono-Kun might have ever-so-slightly hinted at in the above post

But yeah, probably better to get the FES version this week (I know I am).

Also have to echo the suggestions for FF7/8; both amazing games (FF VIII is my favourite game of all time). I know this is stretching it quite a bit since it's a PS1 game AND a 2D game but the PS port of FFVI is a damn good turn based RPG. Word of warning though: the load times are horrendous and actually made me give up on it so not one for the impatient.

Persona 3
Dragon Quest VIII
Disgaea Hour of Darkness
Suikoden 3

Yes. Along with the really high tower and the people that turn into coffins at midnight and the people who put gun-like items to their heads to summon their personas.

Awesome game though. Highly recommended.
