Recently did some low level invasions and it was great. The thief ring makes ambushing and hiding a lot of fun. Also saved one host from getting killed by an invader. Phantoms wearing the thief ring are deadly.

But you yourself have to be careful as well. Hearing some faint footsteps and woah the host appears in front of me, charging at me with his two handed weapon.... Still not defeated yet ;)

If someone needs a low level invader to make the game more interesting....

I was summoned a couple of times to be the boss demon Latria 3-3.
2 guys didn't make it past the two red phantoms mindflayers and the one who made it all the way to me got destroyed literally. I pretty much filled the room with acid clouds. So not only did I take his life, no I also cost him a fortune on repairing all his equipment.

    Such a very dark game...

Love it DD. Got internet back, so next week I'm definitely up for NG whatever + we're on with our SL 124 Dark Soul characters. The modem is now going straight into the PS3 as well, so connection should be vastly improved :)

I'll take you down, just give me all your equipment and fight me with bare fists, I might win. ^_^

Started playing this last night, very nice to be back in the Souls universe after a 6 month break from DkS.
This is the reason I bought a PS3 back in December.
I've taken the wuss option I guess, a Royal with one eye on the Black Phantom guide book, though I might put that to one side.

Had one of those cold moments of panic last night.

I was rolling, quite literally, through the Nexus between waypoints when I misjudge the path and end up tumbling onto Sage Freke. He shouts and gets up as if to start fighting me, but instead stands there watching me. That horrible cold feeling spreads as I think that I have ruined my plans for my character and miss out on all those lovely boss soul spells. But he just stands there. Staring.

Luckily, after restating the game, he's sat back down and just as jolly as ever. And all this happened after I realised that Ostravia has glitched, which means I'll have to wait for NG+ to find out what was behind the door by the red eye knight.

No you don't... Pretty sure you can still access it even if Ostrava dies? I might be wrong though, it's been a while.

Glad to see a bump in here as i've joined the party and picked it up yesterday!

How do you tell which stages are which (numbering wise). I've killed the phalamx and am currently moving through the fangtooth cliffs (i think that's what they are called)

Forgot how bizarre and serene the Nexus is, especially when you combine the music with your lack of footsteps in soul form.

    The first one is 1-1. Then 2-1, then 3-1, then 4-1, then 5-1. It's fairly complicated :p

Heh, once you beat a boss in an area, that opens up -2, then -3 and in some cases -4. When you click on an archstone, it'll give you the option to transport to the start of whichever area you've unlocked.

@puddleduck It seems that Ostravia is the only way to get through that door. He gives you, or drops, the Mausoleum Key, which is the only way to get through that door. Once he's gone, the key is lost for the rest of the play through. That's what my frustrated google searches were showing late last night! ;)

    @StefJamEX
That's correct. You can only get that key from Ostrava. You now have the slightly tough decision of killing him to take the key, letting enemies kill him or waiting until he hands it over, at the end of 1-4. Note that if you're going for the Platinum you'll need to do about half of NG++ as well, so you could hang on and kill Ostrava then if like me you're not a brutal heartless player and don't want to taint your NG+.

Any advice for someone still exploring 1-1 and learning the game. Currently using the long sword and light crossbow plus kite shield. Can't remember who I started as months ago but obviously someone fighty as I'm wearing armour and soul level 4.

Just beaten the 2nd knight so close to some shards... Should I grab the scimitar, upgrade that and swap my fluted armour for plate?

Obviously souls aren't much use as I can't upgrade my level so might as well spend them so I don't lose them... Dying a lot ;)

@DodgyPast You don't need to upgrade your weapons to do level 1-1. Use it as your training grounds for getting good at the combat mechanics. You'll open shortcuts eventually and there is an important ring to be found in one of these shortcuts.

It's not such a huge game, take it slow and enjoy the combat experience. Progress does not only come in level progress but in you getting better at the game which will happen in an amazing way if you stick with it, unlike all the other action games out there.

add- If you need some coop support past 1-1 I may be around for that. Send a PM if you'd like to try that.

    Wow.

Just spent an ungodly amount of time attempting to kill Allant, only to find that my game is bugged as the end game sequence won't trigger. I go back to the Nexus via the False King archstone only to find that everything is just as it was before. BTW, all the archdemons have definitely been slain.

The only thing I can think of that might've caused it is that I died just as I beat the Dragon God, which meant that I slain him (ie, he isn't there anymore) and have his soul, but didn't get the trophy for doing so. It seems that the end game sequence isn't triggered by the archdemon souls you have collected but the trophies you have unlocked. Which has royally screwed me over.

The stupid autosave BS means that I either start all over again (fuck that, too much time and torment have been put in to go through it all again), or ditch the game. I'm so pissed off right now I haven't the words to describe it. I've been remarkably calm throughout the game's trial and challenges, but am now about ready to snap the disc in half and piss on it.

edit: Some quick internet research has revealed that it was indeed the Dragon God trophy glitch which caused the game-breaking bug, and also that it's irreversible. The game has been out since 2009, and a known game-breaking bug still hasn't been patched? If it wasn't for the majesty that is Dark Souls, I'd be telling From to go screw themselves.

@SomaticSense - Yeah that blows. But the final part you are missing does not feature much gameplay so you may find a youtube video that shows you one or both of the possible outcomes - it's more or less an exercise in walking from cutscene to cutscene.

Playing it again for yourself would be better of course but as said you can't die in the part you are missing (or at least I really doubt that's possible)

Been watching Rurikhan's Youtube vids as I'm playing the game (play a bit at night, then catch up to where I am with with his playthrough whilst eating brekkie before work), so I just watched the ending that way. However, the reason I was gutted was that I was realy looking forward to a NG+ playthrough, which was such a great experience in Dark Souls.

I didn't think I would, but I've started again. I've powered through the first bosses of each world already and have also found an amazing sword I never used the first time (Crescent Falchion) which is making things a lot quicker this time. However, I hadn't had any trouble at this point in my first playthrough either, so it may all change when the time comes to fight Flamelurker, Maneater, and Allant, all of whom where the reason I was so crushed I lost all that progress.

One positive though is that, like Dark Souls, the way the levelling and stat-building works, you get better each playthrough as you learn what weapons and stats are best for your style. So while my current build is also a Soldier specialising in dex, I've been way more efficient this time so it's a better build overall with no wasted stat points.

So in short, I must still adore this game to go straight in again after just suffering the crushing demoralisation of losing dozens of hours of progress. If I didn't, it'd be shelved by now.

@SomaticSense - That's the beauty of this game. Even if you encounter that dragon god glitch, you still play it again, after you finally calm down :)

I have to say too, my first character has tons of hours invested, but is definitely my worst character. My second dex based thief is a much better improvement and it took me a fifth of the time to get back where I was.

I reckon you'll enjoy your new character more to be honest :)

I'm just waiting for FuzzyDuck to post some questions now :)

    Well howdy! :D

Played through the first bit of Stonefang Tunnel and got wiped out by the Armoured Spider, got it down to half health on my second attempt, but don't think my melee build is suited to fighting it.

Also got to fight the Tower Knight. Took out the archers (when they first popped up, i thought 'please tell me they're gonna attack this giant knight guy for me!') but got totally creamed by him too!

Just gonna have some tea and then get back to it. Adjusting to the differences between it and Dark Souls right now, but i can see the potential for it to be a comparable time sink. I think i mentioned it already, but walking around the Nexus in soul form is bizarrely serene.

Taking of differences between this and Dark Souls, could a kind soul provide a short-but-extended list? I know for instance that there are no bonfires here and that Nexus is your heal-up / level-up point, but what are the others?

Also, should I progress through the worlds in order (1-1, 1-2, 1-3, etc.) or are there benefits in jumping between them in a different order (like getting better gear etc.)?

    And so it begins :D

For info, the monsters in stonefang are susceptible to piercing attacks - so get that winged spear out you found in 1-2 on the dragon bridge

    Spider
If you're meleeing the spider, you need to take advantage of the pillars on the left and right. He telegraphs a move where he lurches forward a bit - when that's completed, wade in and retreat again. The pillars will stop most of the fire.

Also, an even easier way is to enter the fog gate and immediately go to the left hand wall. A few feet up, there's a bit of the wall that juts out a bit. Get behind that and fire arrows at him from range. You'll hardly get touched.

    Tower knight
taking out the archers is essential and the first thing you should do. Then you can concentrate on his legs. Keep attacking one (Achilles heel etc) and he'll eventually fall. Wade in on his head. Watch out when you're directly behind him, as he has an annoying backward jump.

Alternatively, you can go to the top of the ramparts and he'll switch to his magic lance attack. As soon as he winds his arm back - let rip with a soul ray spell and then immediately roll left or right. You should hit him and also dodge his lance.

It is one of the best games in the world I reckon. Music is awesome. And wait till you hear 5-3's music score. Very emotional along with what happens in there.
