iirc the helicopter crashes and the Norwegians (one controlling the heli and the other shooting) die.

    Two of yous... out!

Norwegian 1 goes to throw a grenade, he derps it and it lands near the chopper, blowing it up and him with it, the remaining norgie gets shot by Gary.

    Prequel will be/is shit.

I call Mary Elizabeth Winstead being the thing and turning into the dog Kurt rescues in the beginning of the original.

Right, I can only remember the one guy running after the dog...Maybe the other died in the crash?...I can vaguely remember them talking and pointing at the dog from the chopper...

    EDIT: Spanky solved it...

Does anyone know if this film will follow the awful trend of every film from the past 20 years and use shitty CGI for the special effects, or will it use similar (and vastly superior) animatronics like John Carpenter's film?

"If I cast my eyes before me, what an
    Infinite space in which I do not exist;
And if I look behind me, what a terrible
Procession of years in which I do not
Exist, and how little space I occupy in
    This vast abyss of time..."

A mixture, some of the stuff in the red band trailer is prosthetic/animatronics with CG added on for tentacles/changes etc

The only good that may come from this film's release is that a semi-decent survival horror game using the licence may be released to coincide with the film.

The Trailer looks fucking rubbish. When they thaw it out of the ice it starts leaping around attacking people.

Here's a bit about the practical effects from Wiki
Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff, Jr. created the practical creature effects for the film, in the studios of Amalgamated Dynamics.[34] In addition to creating the effects for the human-Thing transformations, Gillis, Woodruff and their team had the challenge of coming up with the look of the alien in the ice block unearthed by the Norwegians. While it was initially only intended to be shown as a silhouette, the director liked their designs and encouraged them to fully create the creature, which was realised by creating a monster suit that Tom Woodruff wore.[31] The effects team opted to use cable operated animatronics over more complex hydraulic controls, as they felt they gave a more "organic feel".[31]In order to emulate the creature effects of the first film, Heisserer has revealed that traditional practical effects will be used on the creatures whenever possible.[35] The film's computer generated imagery will be created by Image Engine, the effects house who worked on Neil Blomkamp's 2009 film District 9.[25] Computer Graphics will be used to digitally create extensions on some of the practical animatronic effects, as well as for digital matte paintings and set extensions.[25] Alec Gillis stated that the advancement of animatronic technology since 1982 combined with digital effects allowed the effects team to expand upon the possible creature conceptions.[33] Matthijs van Heijningen preferred to use practical effects over computer imagery, as he believes actors give better performances when they have something physical to react to.

That looks damn good. I actually only just watched The Thing again at the weekend, so it's put me in the mood for more.

    Certainly doesn't look like a 12A either.

    Prequel will be shite because

    1. The leads are cast too young and are too good looking. Hence why there are no bearded hairy gruff norwegians in the trailer.

    2. Its a 12A not the stomach churning 18 the original was.

    3. It will be edited fast and dizzying like an ction movie, instead of the slow burn suspense of the original.

There better be two gruff bearded Norwegians left alive at the end to chase the dog otherwise the filn as so called "cannon" will be rendered completely fucking pointless.

    Hugs original the Thing Blu-ray.

Don't know where you got your facts from, it's a 15 with strong gore and violence.
    BBFC
Plus we've hardly seen any of the characters and it's also edited nice and slowly if you look about :-)

The fact remains if the original was made today it woudl be very different in terms of casting (everyone was male and over 35) and style (very slow and static) and gore content (extreme and gruesome).

In the modern era of marketing at teenagers and budget profit targets over stylistic content, I'm very pessimistic over the prequel and what ultimately its gonna add.

You could make very similar "criticisms" of Carpenter's The Thing being targetted at the tastes of the time (gore heavy special effects, and made for a very male audience) compared to the original B&W versions of The Thing.

Thanks for expressing interest in my signature!

Only gore I can mind from the original is when doc lost his hands. The rest of it was alien. Gross aliens don't seem to bother the ratings board at all these days. Look at all the Abrams critters with cagina mounts in 12 rated flicks, for example.

The whole concept of paranoia is underused I reckon, there is so much potential there. When does this come out btw? I'm on a blackout for it.

Vagina mouths are allowed in any rating. Empire Strikes Back has the biggest vagina in the history of cinema, and that's a U.

Star Wars faux pas aside, the biggest vagina in the history of cinema is the one in Star Trek TMP surely?
