I haven't got anything planned tonight, so instead of staying home to masturbate and press F5, I was thinking about popping down to the local cinema to watch Hellboy 2. CBA to ask if anyone wants to join me (morriss, if you're out there - gimme a ring if you're up for it), so I reckon it'll be just me going.

Disregarding my somewhat dubious choice of movie, is going to the movies solo kewl and independent, or sad and geeky?

I think we decided it was a little sad. Don't you have anyone you can ask to go with?

It's not sad. As I said in that thread, I don't understand why it's weird to go to the cinema alone. Watching a movie is not a sociable event, you sit there in silence in a dark room. If I want to spend time with my friends, then I'll go to the pub or play football or something, y'know - something where you can talk to them. If I want to go somewhere and sit in silence, well, I can do that alone.

Disagree. Some films are best watched whilst getting drunk with a bunch of people and voicing your drunken critique as vocally as possible.

Obviously that's not for the cinema, though.

Unless it's a really shit movie and you're very drunk.

The cinema is where you go to find signal on your phone.

I went to see the Crocodile Hunter by myself when I was with a group of friends, they all went to see Austin Powers 3 and if theres one thing I can't fucking stand its Austin Powers.

I think I made the right choice.

Nothing wrong with it man, its hardly a social occasion and i bet you sit and watch telly films and DVDs all the time on your own.

    Also, Hellboy 2 is fantastic.

I watched Cloverfield in the cinema by myself. Sat right at the front and in the middle. Was brilliant! :D

Fuck whether or not it's "sad and geeky"

You're going to see Hellboy 2. You think that bringing someone to sit next to you for the duration of the film is going to prevent you looking sad and geeky in this case?
  • Deleted user 13 September 2008 19:23:42
Asking on a videogame forum if it's ok to go to the cinema on your own is uncool and geeky.
If i want to see a film, and no-one else does, I'll go, I didn't even realise some people think it's "uncool".

Ditto, went to a mid-afternoon screening and the place was almost deserted. Somehow worked in the movie's favour.

Nothing at all wrong with going to the flicks on your own. Some movies work better with mates for me, usually comedies, but I'd never consider avoiding the cinema just because no one else fancied it. It's a film, not a MMORPG.

I did it once because I desperately wanted to see resident evil when it first came out. I couldnt get anyone to go so I went alone and felt like a total loser and the film was shite.

I went a lot on my own in Australia, but I was out there on my own so didn't have anyone to go with anyway. It's not a sad thing to do in my opinion, just like watching a DVD at home on your own.

    Speak the truth hussy!

I went to see Ghost in the Shell Innocence on my own. No one was going to go and see that with me and the cinema was 2 minutes walk from my flat so it wasnt much of an expedition.

It wasnt exactly packed in the cinema but a fair number of the people there were solo otaku and I enjoyed the film fine.

That said the actual process of gaining admission and finding a seat on my own felt weird and rather lonely, I havent repeated it since.

There is also the fact that its generally assumed that men who go to the cinema alone are into deviancy.

For example cinema staff are warned to look out for solo punters as they may begin furiously masturbating during the performance. Or another man may take it as a coded signal that youre up for some "action" and sit down next to you and get his cock out.

This is why usherettes have torches.

There is nothing wrong in going to the cinema alone... except if you're going to see an romantic comedy, which isn't the case. So go for it!

Where the fuck do you go to the cinema?! That's what you get to go and see porn films at the cinema.

A friend of mine went to the cinema to see the Lion King. There was a bloke jerking off behind her! It almost put her off for life, but she's come round to going to the movies now.

I don't see any problem with attending the cinema by yourself. If anything I found it more exciting when you're watching The Dark Knight and not having anyone turn to you and ask "..And is he good or bad?"

    "..."

    /alone ftw!

Going to the cinema alone is fine. It shows you're not dependent on your friends. Tell them when you're going and if they turn up, cool.

Back from uni and in my hometown, where all my friends are either still busy with the exam period or out of town.

I was considering going to see Iron Man 3 tonight alone, but then I read this thread where it seems like the general opinion is "It's probably okay"/"It's quite bad" so I have decided against it :D

My wife hates the cinema... I got fed up missing out on loads so I just got myself a cine world card and go quite often on my own.

Go Monday and Thursday nights as its quiet so you won't have to sit between couples cosying up..
  • Deleted user 5 May 2013 17:53:31
i go cinema on my own 95% of the time. i admit though when i saw batman dark knight rises and skyfall with friends in a full cinema i really enjoyed that social aspect of it.

As it is, its a real fucking parlova to organise anything with friends for everything else so i just end up going by myself which i don't mind.
