Well, after being disappointed by Spore, I have the thirst for a proper space strategy game. Can't find my old copy of Master of Orion or Stars! though so can someone please recommend a shiny new one I could buy?

OK, thanks for the replies. Never heard of two of those, but I think I've played Homeworld, but isn't that more of an RTS than a Grand Strategy game?

Is that the one that came out recently?

Sins of a Solar empire is very much combat oriented. Depends on what you're looking for really. If you're after a big 4x space game, similar to Masters of Orion, then Galactic Civilisations is what you'd be after. However, if you're looking more for RTS style space strategy then Sins would be a better choice.

A cheap version of which including the expansions is about to come out in the UK too, Powerplaydirect have it for 15 quid.

After reading the antics of one of PC Gamer's staff on their site and playing the demo I can't wait until it turns up.

GalCiv is great. But I haven't played it in ages, because it makes even a big game in Civilization look a bit like Tetris in comparison.

Galactic Civilization 2 is the only game you'll need.

For all my space strategy needs, I play Star Wars: Empire at War. It's not very space-y, but I still play it regularly. Buy Star Wars: Best of PC and you'll get the excellent Knight of the Old Republic, Jedi Knight 2, Battlefront and Republic Commando too. But mostly for the Empire at War, nothing like sending a wing of X-Wings and a Corelian Corvette up against a Star Destroyer (and not winning).

I'd kick the living daylights out of the producers of Tipping Point - Ghandi

Do they do turn based space strategy games anymore? Something a bit like X-Com perhaps but with fleets of ships instead of soldiers and no, or very little focus on resource management?

Something to keep in mind for when I get an Intel based Mac. No OS X version for my creaky old PowerPC. :(

Sins of the Solar Empire lacks a campaign mode. I would say go for the Gal Civ 2 pack until Sins gets it's expansion.

Thanks for all the suggestions! :D

Didn't like Homeworld to be honest but I'll check the others out. Does anyone know if you can get Gal Civ 2 from Steam or similar? I can't find it in the shops and don't want to wait until October :(

Space Empires IV & V on Steam.
Heard this mentioned in a few forums too. Strange Adventures in Infinite Space. Oldie but well regarded apparently.
    Starships unlimited - No idea.
Lost Empire - looks very nice, might have to have a proper look at this one.

    I'll stop now. :)

Good to hear from someone who's played it, it looked interesting.
