Birmingham is a nice city if you are not there at night. That's the basic rule to remember about the city...

Are the BBC still doing tours of the newsroom in The Mailbox? Might be worth a look.

Have a look at Symphony Hall and The NIA. Cabaret is on at the Rep but sold out :(

This is on at the NIA on the 14th if it floats your boat and you can stand the BO levels :) http://uk.games-workshop.com/gamesday/

I fully agree but I often travel for business and even though I then don't care, I still think it's outrageous what they charge you sometimes.

I hooked up my laptop in the Hilton in Budapest and was offered a choice of a slow/OK/fast connection.
I choose fast, I wasn't sure how much the Hungarian Sloty was at really. 2 weeks later I make my expenses and it turns out I paid 30 for the internet connection.
I rang them up to check on the silly price but they said "you must've shoosen the broadband option".

    Oops.

    Fuckers!

Just avoid Broad Street on a Friday and Saturday night and you'll have a great time. I was a student there for three years. Happy days (most of the time).

    Hotel Du Vin

I went there last friday for food. It wasn't bad, though the restaurant wasn't very full and so lacked a little atmosphere in my opinion.

Sorry Pete, I just begrudge the place as it's the 2nd largest city in the UK when it's quite clear that Manchester > London, let alone Birmingham. ;)

Christ, Birmingham may be a bit of a dump in places, the people a little rough round the edges, but nothing compared to the rudeness of Manchester, in my experience.

    ;) Token smiley

If you're not confined to the City you could check out some English Heritage stuff in the surrounding areas; Warwick Castle, Baddesley Clinton, Ragley Hall.

I've stayed in the Malmaison recently (last bank holiday wknd). Very nice, has a spa also.

Bimingham has changed a heck of alot since I was a student there 10 years ago. It's tidied up it's centre and has great shopping if your into that sort of thing, or are taking your Mrs' there.

Buy some fluffy (marshmallow spread, everyones gotta try it) and Willies 100% cocoa bar in Selfridges.

Oh, and thanks all for your help. I'm pretty much sorted now (have hotel and food arranged anyway). Need to fill a few hours with random stuff but will probably just go look around the shops or something.

WTF indeed until you try it.

May I suggest getting a piece of toast, spreading one half with fluffy, the other half with nutella chocolate spread. Now fold down the middle and join the 2 said spreads together......

    Om nyom nyom.

Being stoned (when I used to) probably helps but is a baaad idea as you probably won't stop till the loaf runs out.

I'll have to try that, you say they do it at Selfridges? I've never seen it before.

OH! Psycho if you like peanut butter, find Selfridges in the bullring and find the Skippy brand (it's at the back of the food section somewhere), the one with the light blue lable. Best. Peanut butter. Ever.

    Speak the truth hussy!

They have it on a table in the middle of the food court. It's 2.49 iirc. There are 3 flavours available....

    Original, Strawberry and Raspberry.

    Mr Fucking Egg.

Purnell's is one of the best Restaurants in the country.

The Chinese quarter has great cheap restaurants.

The Balti Triangle is the best place to eat curries.

    Selfridge's food court is godlike.

The Mailbox is great for a drink.

Broad Street is rubbish but how many city centres have shit clubs? Birmingham just lumps them all together.

    Clubs

Custard Factory - Good varied music
    The Yardbird- Jazz, soul, funk
    Edwards - Rock
