All the talk of spotting and investing in new athletic talent is great and commendable. But not once has anyone mentioned that there should be a similar effort put into finding future Dave Brailsfords.

Did anyone else watch the interview with one of the cycling coaches (can't remember his name) last night on BBC 1?

Lineker asked him if he would be interested in other sports, he said cycling is what he does and does best so he'll stick to it, however he did say that other sports could learn from their experience.

Specifically he mentioned how the cycling team first figured out how to make a person the most successful they could be regardless of field and then applied it to cycling. You can use this technique for anything not just cycling or sport.

Someone in the FA needs to pay this guy an immense amount of money and get that applied to football. Learn from the best!

They were saying the same things when Clive Woodward coached us to the Rugby World Cup and that didn't really work out.

I'm sure Brailsford could bring bits and pieces to English football, but you can't just import things wholesale. The key to UK cycling's success has been intensive micro-management of the riders over several years. You couldn't even do that with a club team, let alone the national team.

Why would you want to waste a talent like Brailsford in such a mickey mouse sport as football? They don't need more success, everyone involved makes enough money out of it so why bother improving, it's not like the players care and they won't have funding cut due to bad results. England 3rd in FIFA rankings anyway, tells you all you need to know.

I don't think the techniques they use in cycling training would be of much help in football. It's all about anaerobic fitness with a lot of the cycling, which isn't much use to a footballer. The England team need to learn how to pass a frigging ball rather than improve their fitness.

The footballers in the England team would be even more intolerable if they actually won an International trophy.

Enjoy. Even though it was only Handball and there was no British interest I had as great time yesterday. Well worth arriving early to have a look around, it gets progressively busier as the day goes on.

Have this very funny image of in 5 years or so a lot of racing bikes gathering cobwebs in garages.

5 years? Try next year. Bound to be a chunk of people that will store their bike and gear away for the winter then it sort of doesn't really come out again next spring.

Rhythmic Gymnastics is quite impressive. A good contrast to the explosive artistic variety.

53 African OCs owe a shitload (nearly 400,000 quid) of cash relating to their Africa Village.

Yep, there'll be all sorts of great deals going for barely used bikes on eBay and gumtree this time next year. We'll be seeing plenty of green looking cyclists come the next tube strike too, riding the spotless last years models from the back of the garage.

I've noticed a lot more cyclists on the road in the past 12 months, way before the Olympics or Tour de France victories. I think cycling is starting to get popular in general. Maybe people are worried about the economy and want to spend less on petrol?

Judging by the women's race, I'd say you'll win around two hours of watching people swimming in circles.

All that way, swimming through duck shit and the backflow of other competitors urine only to finish 4th.

    Ouch.
