Did it daily for 1 school year 20 years ago. It's not a hard one to remember. Stil know it word for word as well.

A cool bonus was the sudden realisation that "... And Justice For All" by Metallica actually referred to something.

The pledge to the flag stuff always struck me as being like Communism; forcing people to prove that they are a loyal citizen.

The anchor on that Fox thing just does not allow the other guy to have a point, of any kind. It's childish, and very effective. Just blank the point, and talk a lot. Move on to the next.

Not so much Communist as authoritarian, to a point.

It's a parallel (and irony) I am sure has been pointed out a trillion times. Of course, their loyalty is to a (relatively) historically, free state, rather than a state that paid lip-service to it (see the USSR Constitution, 1936).

The fact that you can't criticise certain elements of American national identity without being screamed at is, of course, ironic again, but it's no surprise that the USA is a contradictory and confusing thing: it's human, and no matter how special they (some) think they are, they're just like everyone else.

They'd have soldiers in the corner of every room who would pistol whip anyone that didn't recite the pledge perfectly.

It's the verbal equivalent of Daily Mail tactics. Deflect the counter point by referencing it in a sentence talking about something else.

"Government cannot support a specific religion"
"PEOPLE CAN CHOOSE WHATEVER RELIGION THEY LIKE, THAT'S CONSTITUTIONAL, THOSE WHO DON'T LIKE IT CAN GO ELSEWHERE"
"A school isn't an individual person"
"BUT AN INDIVIDUAL PERSON CAN CHOOSE WHATEVER RELIGION THEY LIKE, THAT'S CONSTITUTIONAL, THOSE WHO DON'T LIKE IT CAN GO ELSEWHERE"
    etc etc
  • Deleted user 18 July 2013 15:52:42
Also worth mentioning that things like "One Nation Under God" in the pledge and "In God We Trust" on the notes are comparatively recent things in US history, and are there almost solely because of the anti-Communist ways of the 50s. In many many ways, the US has yet to accept that the Cold War is over. Hence why "socialist" is considered a dirty word.

meme, good article in most recent London Review of Books on a book about American identity and fiction.

Can't for the life of me remember who it was on though, or by. Or was it the TLS? oh woe.

I remember! Jill Lepore - reviewed by Amanda Foreman. Last issue just gone of TLS. Not fiction - micro-history, but about American identity.

One bear is now munching down on a salmon. Good work fella.
I also like the seagulls hanging around looking for a few stray scraps. Nature is funny.

The camera is following a bear which is following a bear which has a fat salmon in its gob. Someone is monitoring the cam all the time?! Dear lord, what a job.
