Toast Time, which was being plugged somewhere else by a forumite who knows the developer.

If it had been out on the Spectrum, it would be a fondly remembered classic, but works extremely well with the touchscreen. Well worth a punt!

Yeah, hate to jump on the hype train, but Threes is really good. Reminds me, indirectly, of Drop 7, 'nuff said.

    @yegon

I am actually addicted to Threes! after playing it for thirty minutes earlier this afternoon.

... only just managed to get the 384 block before not having any moves left a swipe or two afterwards.

Yeah, it's great. Not managed a 384 yet, managed 3x192s at once but was devastated when I had no more moves :(

    Why ever not!

A game where not having buttons would hamper the experience if anything.

Any suggestions for 'defend your castle' type games? I fancy something where I get different (but limited) materials and have to build a defence against an onslaught of various things, anything exist along those lines that isn't borked by IAPs?

Honestly I don't think Clash of Clans is that bad. I drop in and out maybe a few times a day and i've not paid any real monies.

If you mean tower defence then there are bloody loads, though would recommend field runners 2.

Radiant Defense is the best of the bunch imo. It has IAPs but the base game is free. I ended purchasing all the packs for about a fiver and probably got a good 25hrs out of it.

Block Fortress! It's like minecraft but in an fixed-size map where you can see the edges, and in the middle you have to build a fortress, and periodically a wave of enemies comes to smash it up. After each wave you spend money earned from blasting the enemy to research new and fancy weapons, and further deck out your fortress with new and ingeniously-placed instruments of death.

    Fun!

But, because it's the App Store and nobody makes money otherwise: IAPs. Still, I wouldn't say it's gimped by them.

Sadly, IAPs have pretty much ruled out the App Store for any sources of entertainment for me. There was a moment a few years ago when proper games that didn't rely on virtual console controllers were coming through, and getting better, and didn't pack themselves full of IAPs, but with very, very few exceptions (a few decent adventures, some puzzles, the occasional new spin on tower defence) it's dead to me now :(

I've noted it goes in waves. You had the first wave of app store titles that became staples, gradually IAP apps came in and it became shit. After a while there was another golden patch of paid titles which have been usurped by the IAP ones once more.

Viva Kickstarter though. Seems to be the safe way to make a paid for game on mobiles.

Blimey, Threes! is a bit good, isn't it? Finally broke the 'three thousand and something' barrier today :)

It's is very good. Although I don't get it! I managed 3,000 within first 10 or so goes, but now I can only just break the 1,000 barrier. The more I play and change tactics, the worse I get.

You actually don't understand what you're doing? Or you don't understand how you can be so bad at it? ;)

I aim to keep my big numbers in the corners if I can, and try not to keep pairs separated by a number because it's hard to get them together then. I try to get 1s and 2s into 3s as soon as humanly possible, and I don't rush my moves even though it's easy to fall into autopilot. When it starts getting busy test your moves before you commit to them to see if you're missing a better option.

Calculords is nicely presented and manages to combine card deck nerdery with basic number-wanging. It's kinda ace.

Mines Of Mars is quite fun, although ignore all reviews that call it a 'Metroidvania' style game, it's absolutely nothing at all like Metroid or Castlevania. It's basically just a clone of 'I Dig It' and similar games.

Shout out for Word Forward - it's made by our very own Vroom, and it's actually pretty good.

I tried Out There. While it's got a nice look I honestly don't see what the fuss is, it's *very* much a game of luck and isn't all that much fun to keep playing over and over. Sometimes you'll keep enough of the three main resources around to keep going, other times you won't. I don't really understand how such an ultimately simplistic game is getting almost 10/10 everywhere.

FTL is much better - or will be when it appears for iOS!

    I'll give that a go.

Threes is ridiculously addictive. I've played more of that than anything else on any system this year.

It can be frustrating, but you go straight back into it, it's just amazingly well put together from a psychological point of view. My best is 7578...but I'm not up there very often.

Egads, Little Big Adventure just been released! Controls sound ropey, need some impressions but I might take the plunge at some point, 2.49.

My best Threes score is 9xxx (I forget the specifics). I've got a few 7xxx since then, but usually I get beaten at 3xxx.
