That wouldn't bother me at all. I rarely use BC on any consoles: I buy each new one for the new games. There's so much that I want to play that I simply don't have enough time to replay anything except a select handful of titles... I bought it simply because it was a US model for movies. If that's something that's important to you, well, then fair enough.

Same here. I've played about 4 PS2 games since I got my PS3.

I would however recommend waiting 'till the 27th of this month for the 80GB model to come out.

Is the 300 Blu-ray any good?

I only recently got a PS3, and I want a good Blu-ray film to show off the awesomeness of HD.

I personally liked it, but I wouldn't say it is a good film to show off the quality with.

Casino Royale is actually probably the best title to show of the quality of blu ray.
  • Deleted user 8 August 2008 20:47:54
    One of the best.

I think out of all of the films i own, the one that shows off HD at its best is, and please don't all virtually hit me for this but, Shoot 'em up. It looks stunning.

The movie has an artificial grain applied in post, so while it's still sharp, it's not demo material.

I'm not sure about the blu-ray version but you can turn the grain off on the HD DVD version.

Good source for info on BD movie statistics, e.g. disk size, video codec used, region free, audio, etc.

Shame they don't have the better Pixar movies on Blu Ray yet, like Wall-E and The Incredibles.

the sharpness of T2 in 1080p allows me to see some of the weaker special effects, also their is some pixelation in parts of the footage such as when arnie jumps the bike into the storm drain

TMNT has a stunning transfer, & i found it to be a fun little movie.
The US Blade Runner BD is highly impressive, and absolutely amazing value.

If you shop on Movietyme, 70 % of the movies are available with Free shipping for around 15 quid or far less. What you then have to weigh up is whether the differential is worth it to you. For me, DVDs are painful to watch and the clarity and punch Blu Ray offers is well worth the extra.

I'm like you, I much rather watch a BD now than a DVD, not only for the improved picture quality but also the higher-fidelity audio too.

Shame then that many BDs are tarnished by poor extras and even those with extras are encoded at 480p instead of 1080i/p so watching them straight after the movie is rather jarring.

I think Paramount do all their extras in 1080i though and so the forthcoming Transformers, which is said to be excellent according to the review I read *here*, also has all the extras in HD too. Hopefully this will set the standard for future releases because it's annoying to be able to watch extras on DVD nicely upscaled to 1080p but not BD extras encoded at 480p!!!

Yes, 300 is superb on BD... the grain and overexaggerated contrast levels are intentional and there's lots more noticeable detail over the DVD version obviously, seeing as it's encoded at 1080p.

But if you're interested in buying it, I'd wait as rumours are that it'll be getting a re-release soon complete with the green screen picture-in-picture feature that was included on the HD DVD release but omitted from the original BD one because Profile 1.1 hadn't been released at that time (Profile 1.1 plays picture-in-picture stuff you see). The US release of Beowulf also has picture-in-picture stuff than the UK version doesn't too. It's a bit annoying really but then publishers expect people to "double-dip" no doubt as they did with DVDs.

By the way, I watched Total Recall on BD yesterday (it has subtitles... :D ... but no extras... :( ) and the picture quality was far better than I expected it to be. It's not demo material by any means and sometimes looks softer than it should but it's far better than I've ever seen it on TV or DVD. The detail does show flaws in the special effects and makeup though but it's still a bloody good movie. Bought the movie on DVD too for a fiver for the extras! :)

Any news on a Moulin Rouge BRD? It's the missus fave film, not my cup of tea but I reckon it would be stunning in HD.

Watched The Shining on BR last night. Aside from a few flaws in the source, the transfer was very good. Especially the opening scenes, with the tracking shots of winding roads and mountains etc.

Decent set of extras, too. More interesting than most of the shit you get nowadays at any rate.

Yeah, The Shining had a very good transfer considering the movie is 28 years old. It's kind of cool watching all these old movies like The Shining, Halloween, Blade Runner and 2001 on BD and seeing them in the kind of quality I've not seen since I saw them at the cinema. Then I'd argue that they look and sound better than I remember!
