Is there a blu ray player recommendations thread? I think it's time to upgrade as I'm still using my launch model PS3 from 2006. Looking for region free, wireless and 3D supported.

I like the look of that. Reading the episode list, the titles all rhyme in sequence :D

Finally sat down and watched The Raid 2 last week. 100/10! I was tired after watching it, it was so amazing it was tiring. I'm going to watch it again in a week or two.

The Sopranos - Complete Collection [Blu-ray]

    absolutely stunning

    The Spy Who Loved Me

My favourite Bond film, mainly because of the car, girl, theme tune, opening sequence. This time I experienced the Blu-ray, which looks great btw. First thing, the girls boobies during the intro sequence are far more visible. Something I hadnít spotted in the past, while on the train, Jaws lifting up and pushing bond against the train roof, Bond looks obviously like a dummy. Iíd forgotten just how much innuendo and humour the film contains. Sound FX havenít aged well, and seem far too comical.

    9/10

Chilled tonight and watched Godzilla (new one) and X:Men Days of Future Past.

We had seen Xmen, but still was good fun watching it again. First time watching Godzilla and I thought it was quite good.

    @dogmanstaruk

Isn't the physical disc of days of future past still a few weeks from release?...

Not that it really matters, but this thread is for reviewing Blu-ray discs :)

Yeah, I wrongly presumed he was on about a dodgy br rip of it... Seemed like an odd choice of thread to post about it in!

Having said that the dodgy web rip of it I watched was cracking quality, so I'm looking forward to getting the disc in a couple of weeks - definitely has potential to be a nice demo disc.

Haven't read through the whole thread, but I'd second, or third, anyone who recommended Sin City (first one). Absolutely gorgeous on bluray.

B/W movies can look great on bluray. Hitchcock's Psycho is fantastic, as is the restoration of The Bride of Frankenstein. Haven't seen the br version of The Haunting (1963), but if the dvd is anything to go by that'll be lovely too.

The film looks great, but it was never going to look amazing, due to the limitations of the source footage. As a film, it's as nauseating as ever.

It has probably been mentioned several times in this thread but Withnail and I looks fantastic and that's just the original Blu-Ray. It has just been remastered to 2K (I'm guessing they couldn't get 4K out of it) so might have to get that for the inevitable Ultra HD (or whatever it's called) upgrade.

We have the Universal Monsters Collection on Blu Ray. It's a bit hit or miss. They kept the original aspect ratio (which isn't a complaint) but there's no consistency. Bride of Frankenstein shows some marked improvements over the DVD but the Wolfman isn't much to write home about.

The original Blu-ray appears have been released in 2011. Then there appears to have been a 2013 release Withnail and I - Limited Edition Embossed Steelbook - Double Play Blu-ray. And now you say they are releasing it again? for such an old film will it really look any better?

    Edit: Just Google'd
WITHNAIL and I [Limited Edition] link
    Seems Arrow are behind it.

I have the 2013 steelbook version and that looks amazing. Not going to bother with the new master as it really looks good enough already.

EDIT: Although I could change my mind at any minute.

Arrow's new transfer looks pretty good. If you're a fan of the film it has definite improvements over the old one.

I own the Dvd. The film is good. I'm not sure the Blu-ray will add much to the experience. Seems like the Arrow release is the one to go for.

No, additional fidelity never adds much to the experience, especially a film brimming with grotty detail like Withnail.
  • Deleted user 22 November 2014 18:40:20
Sound has always been the biggest problem with Withnail.

    Vikings (TV Series)

Only watched episode 1 so far but it seems quite good. The video quality is fantastic and the sound seems good (sound is via hifi speaker, albeit very good hifi speakers).

The picture quality is up there with the best tv series on Blu Ray. On a par with Planet Earth and Life.

    Sin City 2.

The film itself is just ok, but the bluray transfer is absolutely stunning and up there with the best I've seen.
