    @beastmaster

    Me too!

... Arrow are probably the best when it comes to Blu-rays too.

Going to watch this on Christmas Eve.

Rise of the Guardians in 3D. It's a great kids movie that works for us oldies too. The Blu Ray picture quality is brilliant as you'd expect for this type of film and the 3D isn't "in your face" but definitely enhances an already good film.

Peter O' Toole's death this week reminded me of how amazing, how epic and how gorgeous Lawrence of Arabia is. Check out the review on blu-ray.com here. Stunning looking.

Anyone have any recommendations for where I can find the cheapest region-free Blu-ray player?

Can you even unlock The regions? It's rare that blu rays aren't multiple region/universal though

My old Sony is region free which covers it for DVDs, but like you say I think most bluray discs these days are anyway.

I didn't realise that most Blu-rays were region free. Shows what I know...

Region free bluray players tend to be damn expensive.

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

Yes, and also a bit of a faff to use. Usually you have to flick a switch on the machine itself. It's not like the DVD mod which is just a firmware hack. It's a hardware thing which is why it's expensive.

Isn't the PS3 a region free br player? I used to watch US br on my previous 80gb PS3, unless the US is the same br region as UK.

Anyway, the Star Wars blu rays, wow! A must have right along with the Alien and Dark Knight boxsets.

Right I have a question. Are blu rays set in stone 1080p? As I just bought the wonders of our solar system/universe 3 disc box set and it says 1080i.

I've noticed freeview hd channels output at 1080i, but yeah, for BR, I though 1080p was standard, so that sounds very odd.

    It's whatever they want.
Some are 1080p, some 1080i and some 720p.
Depends what it was recorded in. Usually it's tv shows that suffer from this.

    You dare to strike Scurrcules!?

@Short-Round One of my favourite series on TV. The only reason I got these was I thought they would look spectacular in 1080p not just in hd.

I was going to recommend The Proposition, which I watched for the first time in ages yesterday, but google tells me it's 79.99 pretty much everywhere. So scratch that.

Great film, mind. And the Blu-ray is gorgeous. But not at that price (odd though, as it was about 9 everywhere for ages).

That does sound weird. I keep meaning to collect all the BBC docu's on bluray, mainly Attenborough, but if they can't be bothered to do 1080p?!

Recently bought a Panny ST60 (PQ is excellent), so I'm looking for some movie recommendations which excel in picture quality and story.

I have Blade Runner, Alien Anthology, the good Pixar films, Leon, Amelie, Melancholia, Let the Right One In, Slingblade, Goodfellas, Interview With a Vampire, Kill Bill, Shining, Inception, Shawshank, Mesrine and Contagion.

    Thanks in advance!

Of the blurays I've got the best looking that I can think of are:

    Tree of life
    pulp fiction
    Ghibli films look nice
    Fifth Element
    2001 a space odyssey

Those are the ones that spring to mind anyway

    Psn - Emperorzaphod
    Steam - Emperorzaphod
    Wii U - sirzapalot

    Samsara.

I saw a 4k demo at the weekend, and honestly, Samsara isn't far off it. Amazing quality.

Zulu is one of my favourite Blu Rays, picture quality is prefect. There are some remastered 4k discs out there Ghostbusters is one of them which does look great downscaled to 1080p. 4k versions of Taxi Driver,Glory and more importantly The 4k Fireplace Experience :)

Resident Evil: Retribution - Shit film but reference quality picture and sound. This comes from the highly critical bluray.com. They are not wrong. Utterly gobsmacking and I watch this far too often because of it.

Sadly the resident evil 3D films really are the best quality I've seen, apart from avatar. I imagine life of pi would look rather special.

@DMJ excellent film it must be going out of print blurays fluctuate a lot half of the foreign indie films I have have gone up loads. Here's a number of films / tv sets i own and can recommend sure I've missed off a lot of good ones but these are all worth owning:

Foreign: (More for the films than the blurays)

    Ip man
    The raid
Animal kingdom (Aussie no subs required)
    Pans labryinth
    I saw the devil
    A prophet
    36
    Lives of others
    Infernal affairs
    Old boy
Tell no one (imported from France much better encode)
    Anything for her
    Delicatessen
    Gomorrah

    Us/uk
Apocalypse now 3 disc for an old film just stunning
Alien old boxset (new one is inferior)
    Black hawk down (stunning audio)
Stoker (probably not for everyone but I loved it and the direction is superb)
Anything Pixar up and finding nemo are great

    Tv:
Game of thrones - think this is the best quality hbo br and theirs normally rock
Generation kill great series and bluray
Band of brothers great series and bluray

    Avoid at all costs:

French connection the DVD is better quality great film though

I suggest checking bluray.com before buying anything as some films have several releases some of which are poorer quality and use find-DVD.co.uk to find it cheapest I have ordered things from French amazon with no issues also if you wanted any french films sure the same applies for German Italian etc
