I'd give it about 65%. It's typical Dreamworks fare (excluding the first two Shreks and KFP).
It looks beautiful and there's some amazing animation in it, but the writers really pulled some strings in some parts of the story. It has its funny moments and its share of clever gags, although the blue blob (excellently voiced by Seth Rogen) steals a great deal of them. I really didn't care for the characters, except maybe a tiny bit for the main character, Susan.
So yeah, it's fun and entertaining and looks great, but don't expect the brilliance of KFP. It doesn't even touch that level IMO.
One big plus: Steven Colbert voices the President! -
First two Shrek films?
/scoffs
Anyway, obviously I need to go and see this as well. 'Twould be a bit silly not to really.
Did you get to see it in 3D Toonster? -

Registered 8 years agoI only want to see this because Stephen Colbert is in it. No way I'm going to the cinema on my own to see this movie though, that'd be just a little bit creepy. -

IMO, the first two Shreks were the pinnacle of Dreamworks animation. The second one wasn't as good as the first, but I still liked the story and it had some great characters and humour. If it makes you feel any better, I thought the third one was pants. Kung Fu Panda, while a great movie, had some kinks in the story. It slightly bothered me how Po suddenly became a kung fu expert through a five-minute montage

And I did see it in 3D, which sort of enhances the experience but there are a couple times when the movie purposefully throws an object right in your face in a way that says, "oooo, look how 3D it is!"
Slightly changing the subject, but if there is an animation that is beautiful, really entertaining, extremely memorable and makes good use of the 3D, I would highly recommend Coraline. Don't know when it comes out in the UK. -

Registered 8 years agoIt's out on April 3rd over here.
Oh god, the cast list. Stephen Colbert, Hugh Laurie, Will Arnett, Seth Rogen, Kiefer Sutherland, Jeffrey Tambor, Paul Rudd. Also Amy Poehler, and I know she and Will Arnett are married, but it's a little odd that they always seem to appear in the same things.
Still, that's a phenomenal cast list. I really can't go see this on my own though. :/ -

Registered 8 years agoJust saw it, pretty good movie. The cast list was as good as I hoped, but Seth Rogen really made the movie - every one of his scenes was gold. Hugh Laurie was also very good, with his manical laughter, but Colbert was a little underused. Plus, they should have modelled the President in his image.
Loved the nod to Close Encounters. -

Registered 9 years agoPretty poor film and not very kiddie, all the humor seemed quite adult with very few points that really stand out
Saw it in 3D but didnt look as good as Bolt, just seemed to be in 3D because they could rather than for adding anything to it
Did anyone else find the 2 music scenes just embarrasing to watch rather than 'cool'!

I thought the 3D was done better than in Bolt. In Bolt I found that images became quite blurry when they appeared to come far out of the screen. Monsters vs aliens stayed nice and sharp.

I enjoyed MvA, some nice little nods to classic sci-fi. The kids enjoyed it and I was entertained, what more do you want.
Edit: a lot better than Madagascar 2 -

I met an animator from Dreamworks in a Starbucks in Tokyo a few weeks back (how jet setty am I?). Anyway, he reckons that Shrek 4 is the best they've ever made.

One other thing about MvA is that they literally showed all the funniest moments in the trailers. -

It probably isn't, to be honest; look at the Antz/Bug's Life - Finding Nemo/Shark's Tale evidence.
And yeah, as I said in the film review thread, it ain't great. Few funny moments, but kids don't get the references for the characters and adults grow bored of this ultra-colourful shallow pap fast. -
