    Great preview

Star Trek Online is shaping up to be a Trekkie's dream, with plenty of space and on-foot battles, plenty of diplomatic and research missions, and plenty of customisation of both the character and vehicles in the game.

I'd be lying if I said the chance to play the beta of this didn't factor into my Champions Online lifetime sub buying decision. It really does look incredible though. I'm still hoping for some possible alternate universe stuff based on the Star Trek movie, or the Mirror Universe, and it's been heavily hinted at the very least there'll be some Mirror Universe stuff, since it's a big part of the series.

Well, the lifetime sub does get you a mirror universe uniform, so there's a start :)

Really looking forward to it - it wasn't the main reason behind my going for the CO sub though, rather I viewed it a very nice cherry on top of the cake that sweetened the deal. I've always intend to sub to both and had 1 eye open on the website watching for the beta applications to open.

I've got a link to the STO forums on my desktop, I've been on there for ages, just in case. I've kept up to date with the story as they release it, and all the interviews the link to. It's a great source of info, and no nerd rage yet! Kind of. Should've been around when people found out the Federation could get cloaks ;)

I did always plan to sub to Champions Online, but the opportunity to have it all paid for so I don't have to budget for it (because I'm shockingly bad with money) was too much to miss out on. STO access is a bonus for me that I'll gladly accept.

I was concerned that it'd be a universe of Federation ships, but the STO forums have plenty of Klingon lovers that'll be ready for war.

I cant decide whether I want to be Klingon or Federation.

    I'm leaning towards Klingon though.

As a side note, I just noticed on their site that they've opened beta applications. Some of us already have beta entry because of CO, but anyone that doesn't and is interested, set course and have a go. :)

New look for the site and there is now a backstory video available on EGTV.

    Go forth comrades!

My machine will probably run this now! Just got a new laptop, runs Champions Online with everything up better than my old PC did with everything at minimum, so I'm really, really looking forward to some space battle now!

Still not entirely sold on the ground combat, but it's looks and feel functional enough, and plays well too - I was tempted to just stand around and play it again and the again at the Expo, but that'd have been selfish! I'm not sure how the final game will feel though, at the Expo the shields were obviously high end ones so you could get away without a scratch.

Cheers up for the heads up on the backstory video, I didn't know about that one. I've been following the story on the site though (as well as posting links in the group which I'm guessing are all broken now!), I do love it.

Why wouldn't I still be playing CO? It's still quite good, I just don't play it for hours at a time. A bit here and a bit there, that's how I roll in CO. That is not how I'll roll in STO, it will be obsessive nights of playing so long the days merge together and I risk losing my sanity. Well, more so.

The group is rubbish mcmonkeyplc, ignore it. It's pretty much me talking to myself. I hope UK retailers start announcing pre-order bonuses soon so I can get it ordered, as well as if there will be a special edition - I doubt it, but if there is I want it!

Ah, I just can't remember last time I saw you online. I was playing earlier today in Lemuria and thinking I hadn't seen Shark In A Trenchcoat for a while :-D

I'd settle for getting my beta invite, which has been a point of tension between Cryptic and the players. Odds are I won't get it until near the end of September.

I really hated the ground combat, I've seen every single episode of Star Trek (even the animated ones many, many years ago) and I don't remember Federation forces just standing 10 feet away from Klingons firing their phasers at them.

MMO combat like that needs to go away, it may have been a necessity in the old days but now it's awful.

They could have just left ground combat out entirely. Regardless of how people felt about the games, no review I read said Legacy, or Starfleet Command, or Conquest, or Tactical Assault were ruined by no ground combat. I do see why it's there, they want to present all facets of Trek including exploring planets.

You're right DDevil, I haven't been on all that much on CO. I got to a mission designed for 2 and can't be bothered asking anyone else for help. I haven't even tried it myself, but I don't think I'm up to it. I might have another couple of mission though, I'll have a look tonight.

I hope Star Trek Online don't force me to socialise, I personally want to be playing on my own for the most part

Dont worry gayrub, with your antics in the Star Trek XI thread I'm pretty sure most people on here wont want to socialise with you.

    Oooh zing.

As for the game as you command your own ship with AI bridge crew it's probably one of the most soloable games out there.

I've got a ton of team missions left to do in Lemuria and Monster Island. We should team up at some point. Anyway, my current sub period is up on the 10th December, so I've got then to decide whether to cancel or not.

I'm the opposite of gayrub, I want to be part of a fleet and do the episodes with other people.

I can't stand co-op or pVp, I tried the Matrix and there was practically no High quality missions that you could do, I hope this my second attempt at an MMO will be better

This - you don't want to feel too crowded, though also not alone. I hope there's a distress signal button (something similar to the MEDIC button in TF2, though only triggerable if your shields go down to avoid people spamming it) so you can warp to people aid if they are soloing then get in trouble. I did like that similar feature in Warhammer Online that allowed you to make epic comebacks in PvP.

So, are there any news on those who were guranteed with closed beta access?

The closest news I've read on the STO forums is that CO lifetime subbers will be getting in December at the latest. I have a feeling it'll just be selective, USA-centric tests at first anyway like CO was (keeps it easier to track down bugs and load test if you keep it in a fixed session).
