The main bullet points are:

I did some maths earlier and I consider myself a very casual player, certainly in the recent past and by adding up all my "/played" numbers I've spent around 33 days of my life on STO since launch. lol.

Season 8.5 update!
The latest update to Star Trek Online, Season 8.5, is just around the corner, and we have some pleasant surprises for you.
The update will be releasing on January 30, 2014, as part of Star Trek Online’s 4th anniversary celebration. Participating in the usual fun and games with Q will let you earn a cool new starship (or three!). Federation, Romulan Republic, and Klingon Defense Force scientists have been hard at work adapting Dyson technology to their standard ship designs, and you can be among the first to try out these new hybrid starships.
We also will be releasing a new featured episode alongside the update – it stars a Star Trek actor who will bring their character to STO for the first time. We’re excited to be continuing the storyline for the game with this amazing episode, and we’ll be announcing who this actor is in about a week, when you will get your first sneak peek at the episode.
We’re not stopping there, though.
The STO team is always working to improve the game. In Season 8, we updated the Federation tutorial to improve the initial experience. In this update, we have made a pass at 12 episodes in the early Federation experience, updating the episodes to hit a higher quality bar with both art and gameplay improvements throughout.
Another area we looked at was the hourly event calendar. Our data showed that few of these events were being played often, and so we are re-envisioning the hourly events as weekend-long events with better rewards. You can expect the hourly calendar to disappear with Season 8.5, with the new events showing up on the main calendar. Additionally, a small selection of the existing hourly events are being turned into Daily missions – we’ll provide more information on this soon.
And there's something exciting for players that have many starships in spacedock! With the Season 8.5 update, you will be able to easily switch between your starships in sector space and social zones – we want to make it easy to quickly get to the ship you want to fly. Not only that, but each of your starships can have multiple pre-made build-outs saved, and you will be able to switch between them quickly and easily. Now you will be able to prepare separate PvE and PvP builds, or have a special anti-Voth spec for your ships waiting to quickly be swapped in. Equipping ships also gets easier with the new “easy equip” feature coming in the update. In addition, we’re going to be increasing the current ship slot limit. You’re going to love it!
We have many more details on this update coming your way in a series of dev blogs during the next two weeks as we approach the release date. All of the features above and more will be covered in depth by the team.

Federation Klingon War updates
As part of our mid-season release, we are excited to announce that we have gone back and retouched many of our early episodes in the Federation’s “Klingon War” story arc. These episodes are key to the early gameplay for Federation characters, and they help to establish both how to play the game and what kind of Star Trek stories players should expect. As such, that means that they can benefit from many of the improvements that Star Trek Online has gained over the intervening years since launch – and now they will!Read about some changes, War is Good for Business has been removed. and in the time travel episode where you rescue the Enterprise they actually notice what ship class you're flying or if you're even Federation or Romulan Allied Federation.
Some of the “Klingon War” stories have already been updated, of course; both “Stranded in Space” and “Diplomatic Orders” were remastered to take advantage of new techniques and new code that improved their quality. Rather than turn one or two more episodes into Feature Episodes, though, we’ve chosen to go through and make noticeable improvements on all of them. The stories remain the same and much of the gameplay is still there, but we’ve tweaked the missions to be faster, more dynamic, and more visually interesting. Here’s a selection of some of the things we’ve done:
•Minicontacts: We’ve added minicontacts – the fly-out messages from your bridge officers (or occasionally, from your enemies!) – to enhance the storytelling of the game. Minicontacts are a great way for us to get across a little bit of dialog, flavor, or explanatory text without taking up an entire contact window or stopping the flow of play, so we’ve taken advantage of these.
•Better Encounter Pacing: Rather than placing several encounters with the same difficulty level all in a row, we’ve paced the encounters so that you’ll face different levels of challenge. Sometimes you’ll surprise a few enemy ensigns or technicians, and you’ll be able to defeat them handily. But when you reach the goal of your mission, you’d better be prepared for a tough enemy captain who’s trying to stop you!
•Removed Extraneous Encounters: To improve the flow of the missions, we’ve removed some encounters that didn’t make sense or weren’t important to the story. This way, you know that when you’re pressed into combat with enemies, it’s because it’s important to your goals.
•Cloak-Friendly: If you play a ship with a cloaking device, like an upgraded Defiant-class vessel or a Federation-allied Romulan ship, you’ll find that many of the missions are much more accommodating for use of your cloaking device. You won’t be decloaked by most simple actions, and sometimes having your cloak active can change how other ships respond to you.
•New Art and Environments: We’ve updated some of our old maps with new art to make them more beautiful, more playable, and more distinctive. You’ll see this on missions such as “Researcher Rescue” and “The Kuvah’magh,” where the outdoor maps have been redone to take advantage of new terrain and vegetation, and in “Hide and Seek” and “Stop the Signal,” where the Klingon listening posts are now much more Klingon-themed. “Task Force Hippocrates” boasts an entirely new interior map for its research hospital, “The Kuvah’magh” has a new map for the Federation embassy on Regulus IV, and the maps for H’atoria in “The Ultimate Klingon” likewise got an update – including all of our latest tricks for the winter cold, where you’ll see the fog of your breath and slip on the black ice!
•Tightened and Improved Dialog: In many places we’ve tightened up the dialog for the mission, so that you can pick up the story with only a page or two of text. Also, we’ve made sure that your captain has a say in how missions progress; instead of being told what to do by your bridge officers, you’re giving orders while they look to you for leadership. Along with this, we’ve snuck in a few cases where your species or career can alter the dialog, and cases where your choice of dialog can affect the outcome of the mission.
•Career-specific Options and Accolades: We’ve added alternative paths for several mission goals based on your career. If you’re not playing a character of the appropriate career, fear not – you can still team up with someone and follow the alternative path, and get credit for the new accolades that are included!
Even if you’ve already played through this story arc in the past, you can easily replay these episodes by entering your Mission Journal (default key ‘J’), selecting the “Klingon War” episodes tab, and choosing to ‘Replay’ them. This way you can experience all of the improved content with your favorite characters, and collect the new accolades. Be sure to try them out!

CaptainGeko here, and wow am I excited tell you about a few new features heading your way in Star Trek Online – the new Ship Management, Load-Outs, and Quick-Equip systems. These systems are really going to change the way you play the game, and we couldn’t be more excited to share them with you.
Ship Management System
This system is the core of the 3 new features. Basically, this system will allow you to swap between ships from any public/social (non-instanced) map – like Sector Space, Earth Space Dock, etc. You simply select the ship you want, your old ship will warp away, and your new ship will warp in. But wait, there’s more…
Have you ever logged into the game and wanted to change to your cruiser, escort, etc. but ultimately decided not to because it would take too much time and you only had an hour or so to play? You just didn’t want to invest the 30 or 40 minutes it can take in setting up your new ship build? Well, the new Ship Management System can help you there too as we are introducing another new feature we are calling Load-outs.
This system will allow you to set up pre-set load-outs for each of your ships (two slots are provided for free on each ship, and additional load-out slots may be purchased in the C-Store). When you swap to a different ship, it will remember the load-out you left it in, and you can immediately swap to a different saved load-out if you choose. You don’t even need to have the gear you need in your inventory as swapping load-outs will pull your gear (e.g. weapons, shields, devices, consoles, etc.) from your inventory, other ships, and even your bank (NOTE: it will not be able to pull from your Account Bank, Fleet Bank, or other characters, though). The same gear can be assigned to multiple ships and load-outs. Load-outs can also be set up to remember your Bridge Officers, and soon after the initial implementation of the system is released, load-outs will also remember your Duty Officers and even your Power Tray layout. BAM! You’re ready to go!
When the system launches, you will only be able to edit load-outs of your “readied” ship. So if you want to create or edit a load-out for a different ship, you will have to switch to that ship via a “ship selector” contact. Later, the system will allow you to edit any of your “inactive” ships at the “ship selector” contact without needing to make them your “readied” ship.
Quick Equip System
To make setting up load-outs even easier, we are introducing the brand-new Quick-Equip system. Simply click on any gear slot in your ship’s status screen and you will see a list of all available gear that can go into that slot. The system will even tell you where that gear is located – whether it is in your inventory, your bank, or on another ship. If you are at a starbase, Quick-Equip will allow you to move gear freely from bank to ship to ship. If you are not at a starbase, Quick-Equip will restrict you to the gear in your inventory and readied small craft, but it will still show you other potential gear you have stored in the bank or on another ship – that gear will just be grayed out. This allows you to know what other options you may have waiting for you. The Quick-Equip system also works when equipping your Captain and Bridge Officers in their status menus.
Finally, with the release of these new systems, we will be raising the cap on starship slots to 50! This really is going to be awesome!
The above features are still a work in progress, so with testing, iteration and your valued feedback, details are subject to change. The system will be hitting Tribble soon, so lookout for Feedback threads that will be posted and make sure to try it out for yourself and leave your feedback. Also, as mentioned, some of the above features may release shortly after the launch of Season 8.5 on the 30th of this month.

The loadouts system is going to mean I'll be using a lot of my older ships, changing things around is the reason why most of everyone's fleet just sits in space dock with cobwebs over it.
The new cast member is revealed!
Dyson Science Destroyer ships! appartenly according to information I've found in science mode the ship has the usual 3,3 weapons and a commander sci and lt cmdr tac, and in tactical mode it gains 4,3 weapons and the tac goes to cmdr and the sci goes to lt cmdr
to get these ships you need to get 800 qmmendations, 400 of which will be given when you do the new feature episode, and you get 40 a day when you do a daily. in a new reputation slot. So it's about 15 days out of 25 days.

Is this a new commendation, or Dyson? I've got plenty of Dyson already so obviously I'm hoping it's that
new commendation given out by Q!
Damn. Oh well, will still do it as I quite fancy that ship. Heck, I'm sure most of us that play regularly did that stupid ice race daily for a free ship they'll never use. Because FREE!

At first I was happy, because I thought that meant we were getting the proper Defiant Bridge for free. Then when I went to claim it, and realised I already had it. It's the almost sort of Defiant bridge pack. They're close, but not quite the one from the TV show I was hoping for. Not really surprised though, the proper TV show one is only available as part of a bundle with some DS9 clothing, ships and weapons.
