    Not a recommendations thread!

Site starting in September offering downloads of DRM-free PC classics at less thana fiver (US based). All XP and Vista compatible.

Could well be worth a look in a few months.

The day charity died - NEVER FORGET

(the mic was OK in the end)

To quote Men In Black: Guess I'll have to buy the White Album again...

...but Vista and XP compatibility is (usually) worth it.

    This will last 5 minutes.

You could pick most of those up at a car boot for 50p.

XP and Vista compatible? I'll believe it when I see it. What are the doing? Re-coding the games? Pffft, yeah right.

As soon as LucasArts and whoever has any rights to the Microprose back-catalogue signs up I'm there.

Microprose came back to life last year, buying back a lot of IP from Atari.

They're only creating hardware at the moment though, oddly.

They're including fanmade patches and fixes and re-wrapping it all up in a new installer (probably a self extracting winrar). Hardly future brain science.

Quite an interesting interview over at Shacknews with one of their marketing chaps.

    This space left intentionally blank.

So you could pick it up for 50p then download all the XP/Vista crap for nothing anyway? Great.

How are they going to provide tech support for that?

We're hoping that with the low price point--we're also adding a bunch of added value features. For some of the key games, we're gonna have really in-depth game guides. And just trying to have that low price point, plus the no DRM, sort of working on a bit of an honor system.

The gamers that we're targeting are going to end up being a more mature audience anyways, because they're these hardcore, old-school PC gamers. For $5.99 or $9.99, it's pretty cheap. Hopefully people won't be too tempted to copy it and give it to their buddies, because it's pretty cheap. And hopefully the more sales we get, obviously, the more likely we are to bring on additional publishers and different titles. If everyone's pirating games right off the bat, then I guess we'd be in a bit of trouble.

Coming to a torrent site near you the same day the site goes live, then.

Instead of being all 'cynical and edgy' about it, people could, you know, buy some games from them, try it out. Unless you're all really keen on being anally probed and DNA checked every time you install a game in years to come. Essentially, what you're paying for is the hassle-free install and play without all the fucking about you sometimes need to do to get the older games working.

I'm probably going to get a couple of games from it seeing as I'm squarely in their demographic and it would be rude not to.

Yuh. I'm pretty interested in this, but I'm one of those crazy Abandonware scene peoples who get interested when someone manages to crack a bootloader game.

Maybe I changed my mind in alternate universe and posted it after all. I even typed out the thread title and pasted the link before thinking better of it.

And for some reason I just typed analert instead of alternate.

I wouldn't mind playing both Fallout games to be fair.
