Anyone recommend any other good websites for prebuilt systems like this?

Also, what's the score with Vista/XP and DirectX10. I was thinking of sticking with XP for now.

Hey, MP - if you do go for that PC let me know, as I need to upgrade and am tempted. After my current windtunnel P4 I'd like something quiet and powerful enough to run upcoming games. Am also tempted by the ones on Overclockers (and the water-cooling), so if anyone has any tips on them please post :)

    P35s are very solid boards.

I would say that you do want 4Gb ( 2x2Gb ) and to stick Vista x64 on it.

    A damn good deal.

    It's an ebay job.

How will that pan out for future upgrades? ie: Quadcore processor, ram and moar graphics.

I've just tried to 'build' that spec on Dabs and it comes in just shy of 500.... Sounds a bit too good to be true.

Looking over the last few pages, it would seem 500-700 should get a pretty rocking system. Close to buying a new PC, and looking now at overclockers and awd-it.

I want a PC I can stick in my AV rack, and one that will be as silent as possible. Dont need one of the fancy HCPC casses (no need for chasis screens or controls or any of that stuff) but, can you run something like this on its side? May sound like a silly question, but do the DVD/Blu-ray drives in these machines work at any angle?

Cool. Can I ask is that off a private sale or a system builder? If it's a system builder can you point me in their direction, that spec sounds pretty close to what I'm after.

    Thanks

Can you get them to upgrade the Maxtor HDD ? It's PATA ( IDE in my language ) when it should be SATA 2 and I've had more maxtor's give me the epic fail of death than any other brand.

I'm going to give the ebay dude a miss and wait for payday and a AWD-IT Overclocked build.

My only real question now is: Core 2 Quad Q6600 vs Core 2 Duo E8400.

    Winner =?

Q6600 is cheap and is a mighty overclocker. Currently running mine on air at 3.6Ghz (stock is 2.4). It's been a great heart to my system.

Finally got round to ordering this.

I'm thinking of selling the 9600 GT straight away before I even turn it on if anyone is interested and sticking a 4870 in there.

Worth doing? Will I see a pretty massive jump in performance over the 9600 bearing in mind I wont be running any resolutions over 1680 x 1050.

It's not clear whether that PC has a DVD drive to me, but I guess I could just cannibalise the drives from my existing PC? Alternatively, I might go for a Blu Ray HDDVD combo drive like this one - anyone had any experience with them?

The 4870 is hugely better and I'd be surprised if you didn't see a difference on any resolution.

You can get them to customise anything if you phone them up, and could've gotten them to change the 9600 to a 4870 for you. Perhaps it's not too late?

edit: Yes, they do come with a DVD drive and such. AWD-IT seems good to me. Cheap prices - you have to pay for delivery, but they use really good couriers (not City Link, thank god) and even after paying for the courier, it's still cheaper or the same price as competitors like Dino PC.

The customer support is very good and helpful and I'd recommend phoning them up for advice / customisations.

Is DDR2 vs DDR3 something to worry about at all further down the line?

What about Vista 64 bit? Im hearing about compatibility issues but I was under the impression that 32 bit wouldnt pick up more than 2 gig of ram?

I'll be happy if it lasts 3 years with a quad core and Graphics card upgrades along the way.

I think 6/12 months is a little extreme :) You're talking about high settings all the time I assume?

I was running Stalker and Warhammer with only a few problems on my 3 year old piece of shite only last week.

    Hello,

Can anyone give me a bit of advice if this looks like a decent package, please?

Spec seems good for the money, and for an extra 20 I can upgrade to an LG screen instead of the one that comes as default. Mostly going to be using it for MMORPGs and probably RTS. I get my FPS fix off the 360 (I know).

Right, don't suppose anyone can give me a quick recommendation between an 8800gt and a 4850?

Much obliged to you kind people. =)

I've been researching as part of a PC build and the 4850 spanks the 8800gt, according to pretty much everybody.

It cost 30 to upgrade from a 8800gt to 4850 in the machine I've bought, which seems reasonable given the jump in performance.

I went for this in the end:

    Q6600 processor
    Asus P5KC mobo
    ATI 4850
    500Gig SATA II disc

How much to go the next step and get a 4870? Might be worth it.

Generally about another 50 quid from 4850 to 4870.

FPS is limited to your monitor's refresh rate is it not? So if you only have it set to 60hertz, you can only see 60 FPS and anything above that is useless?

The Sonata cases are great too. I have a Coolermaster at the moment but would very happily go for a new Sonata.
