I would love it if they did release both, one will be more lot more affordable than the other hence my scepticism. Will wait and see.

A prosumer body isn't likely given the current economy or Japanese manufacturing base, or any more likely since last time the rumours came round. A pro body could be more likely though.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

Most respected Nikon experts including Thom Hogan think the D700 replacement is coming before the D300 replacement. Don't forget the D300s has come out since the D700.

D700 with video is likely imo (D700S or something). They've needed something to compete with the 5DmkII for ages now.

Really wish they'd put the amazing D3s sensor in a D700s. Would remortgage the house!

Kalel you have a d700 don't you? Not long after realease either? I suspect it will be 2013 before we see a replacement. But my memory of release may be off, if I remember correctly yours was a wedding present because your better half likes togging.

2012 at the latest - see 2nd paragraph (July 30 rumors) of this: http://www.bythom.com/2011%20Nikon%20News.htm

Thom Hogan's not an insider as such but is pretty well connected in the Nikon world.

Hoping that either the D800 isn't extortionate, or that 2nd hand D700s (plural, not a new model :-) drop in price drastically as people upgrade en masse.

Maybe right D3 changed every other year???? Over a period of 6 years possibly. Maybe a D700 with D3s sensor before a D800.

D3 then d3x then d3s last 2 offering something different more pixels / iso but all 2 years apart I think. An improve, net on the original d3 in some way though. Sorry didn't make myself clear.

Ah yeah. Incidentally quite a few people think it's more likely that if the D700 replacement inherits one of the D3* sensors that it'll be the 24MP D3X one. 12MP (D3S) not considered enough to compete with Canon.

Would like the 24mpx and Iso.

    Can but hope.

    All correct.

I still think the main trick Nikon are missing is video on the D700. That is losing them more customers than the pixelcount.

I've not been massively impressed with the 1080 video from my D7000. I didn't get the 7k for video so it's no issue and I already have the lovely Canon HD100 which I've had pretty much since release.

36.3mp, hd video...3k for the new d800. Looks pretty sweet though, about time it launched but saving will take some time i think!

Anyone wish to convince me not to buy a D700?

I took one out for the day once. They're quite weighty, my arms ached at the end of it.

What's the rumour mil saying about new cameras at the moment?

I think the only think that would make me regret buying a D700 at this point would be the release of a lighter and cheaper version. Sill think there's a gap for prosumer body full frame camera for about 1k.

Oh it's a lovely camera to use, the weight is the negative I can think of especially with a big zoom lens on.
I didn't really use much of the iso range as it was bright sunshine most of the day but it did produce some great photos of Virginia Waters finest sights.

It is heavy, although that is obviously for good reason. You'll be glad it's that solid when you drop it.

Actually when I went with a friend to buy a new camera the South African man mountain who worked in the shop did say you could kill a man with a D700!

We went somewhere else quite sharpish and got a D90 :)

Heavy I don't mind, my D80 is gripped along with lens and flash gun that is quite chunky. Really want one to get the best from my primes and the high ISO capability. Bar two DX zooms everything I have is geared towards FX, by pure chance found out a loan over 3 years would be well affordable so it is stuck in my head now. Damn camera envy

Wow, a three year loan to buy a camera seems a bit extreme.

Your life I guess, but I'd think long and hard about that one.
  • Deleted user 27 March 2012 14:27:37
Its a fine camera. The iso ranges are fantastic. I think if one was going to get one, i think i maybe wait and see what new model is going to have HD video recording and significant MP increase.

Its really easy to use, but i find it frustrating that all the RAW files are NEFS and the adobe programs you have to find plug in etc. But viewnx2 which is free, is really helpful converting to tiffs etc.

I've been having a lot of fun with it, i'm not yet fully comfortable with it, its more of a confidence issue - i been using a Mamiya RB 6X7 solidly for the last few years so i'm not wholly used to the d700. But its easy to use, and i been loving night shooting on it.

I am tempted to trade my in, for a canon mark 2 or 3 as i want to do some filming, but its a reluctant trade in if i do.

p.s also the FX frames with prime lenses are awesome. I only have a 50mm (1.4) BUTS its awesome.

I got a set on flickr wiht some d700 shots in http://www.flickr.com/photos/28133909@N06/sets/72157624280372617/

The new model has been announced (D800) and it does have HD video and twice the MPs.

    It's also over 3k.

Yeah, to be honest if the payments are minimal it doesn't bother me too much. Trying to stop smoking so that covers it and then some, may well just put the money aside and save it.

Unless you have seriously old Adobe software, it will all read D700 NEFs no trouble at all.

Nah that's the competition (5D Mk III). D800 is 2400.
edit - and has three times the MPs.
